[CANUFNET] Downtown trees

Downtown tree survival is a big challenge for everybody. My usual
response when somebody asks be about planting native trees in downtown
areas is: "There are no native trees for those ecosystems". I suppose the
only one you could make an argument for is Ginkgo, as it has been
cultivated in urban areas in Asia for a few thousand years. Is a few
thousand years enough time to make it native?

That being said, we've had reasonable success with the following species:
Sophora japonica & Ginkgo. We've tried lots of others ( but I wouldn't
call them successes).

Tree of Heaven seems to do fine, though we don't plant it. If you didn't
mind the maintenance to keep it under control, you could make a coarse
pleached display.

Some of the other invasive trees would likely do well too, as long as you
can control the spread/less desirable attributes. Maintaining a pleached
Tree of Heaven would be less cost & less work than replacing dead native
trees every year.

Hi All,

I represent a local tree planting charity in London which is trying to
install trees in Downtown London. Species selection (and acceptance by
the
City) is proving difficult due to concerns with tolerance of downtown
conditions. I would find it extremely helpful to hear what species are
being
used (successfully or otherwise) in other downtown areas. Native species
would be of highest interest.

Thanks,
Dean Sheppard
