Dear urban foresters,

We are looking at developing a set of compensation guidelines for the removal of trees within the urban and rural area of Ottawa as a result of development. As you well know, it can be a challenge to put a value on vegetation, particularly for "groups" of trees, and I am looking to you to see what has been done elsewhere. The questions I have are as follows:

1) How do you calculate the value of a hedgerow?

2) How do you calculate the value of a small woodlot or large group of trees (around 15 trees or greater)?

3) In development scenarios, are the developers required to compensate for the removal of trees on private property in your jurisdiction? If so, do you have guidelines to assist you in assessing the value of these trees?

When I speak of value, this can be expressed as either tree replacement or monetary value.

Thanks for your feedback!
