Not to acknowledge Greg's concern for staffing pay rates but as far as the particular day of the weekend goes, I have to vote for Sunday. We started tree day on a Saturday and there were just too many family related things happening then, most notably, kids sports (soccer, hockey etc.). Sunday did get the biggest draw to the tree event. Scout and Guide troops were more available then too. Concerned about church? What's more spiritual than planting a tree in nature's cathedrals.

Three of the core municipalities of Greater Victoria (Saanich, Victoria and Oak Bay) have been celebrating "Tree Appreciation Day" on approx. the first Sunday in November. In Saanich, the first TAD was Nov., 1995. November coincides with our monsoons out here and promotes to the public that mid to late fall as the best time to plant trees in a coastal climate to encourage establishment prior to our summer drought. The celebration here has also promoted native tree and associated plantings in either a forest, streamside or meadow re-creation.
I realize that Nov. is too late for the rest of Canada but I think a reasonable compromise would be Late Sept Early Oct. and in my opinion the day definitely should be a stand alone date. Our Northwest ISA Chapter conference happens around that time and could have a "Tree Day" celebration planting when the conference rotates to this side of the boarder.

Canada Needs a National Tree Day!

In November 2010, MP Royal Galipeau (Ottawa-Orléans) introduced a Motion (M-575) to name the Wednesday of National Forest Week as National Tree Day. This year, the day will be on September 21, 2011.

National Tree Day will be a day of action when Canadians will celebrate through planting and other activities, the great things that trees give us. There will also be educational activities that will help us learn how trees help make Canada the great, green nation it is today. It will also be a time for awareness – a chance for us to reflect on how protecting trees adds so much to our lives.

It’s important for us to make sure that our trees, things which many Canadians take for granted, receive their due. I am asking you, as an individual or as a representative of your organization, to raise the profile of trees by supporting Mr. Galipeau’s very worthwhile initiative.

The second hour of debate on motion M-575 is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, March 1, 2011.

We all know Canadians love trees. Now is the time to show it.

Contact your MP and send him or her a message that you love trees, and that they need to vote in favour of Motion M-575 to recognize National Tree Day.

Show your support on our Facebook page and Twitter and spread the word to others by forwarding this message.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at Tree Canada at tcf at treecanada.ca

Thank you !

Merci!
