URBAN FORESTRY INTERN

(April 26, 2010 to August 27, 2010)

 

Reporting to the Urban Forestry Supervisor, the successful candidate will
work both in an office and in the field to independently carry out tree
inventory and insect/disease surveys on streets, parks, and municipal
properties with compilation of data and report creation.  Also investigating
and assisting with enquiries from the public on tree related issues on
Public Property. Will have a sound knowledge of methods, competent use of
powered/manual tools, and equipment application for several functional areas
of Urban Forestry maintenance work, such as planting, small tree
pruning/removal. Exercising some independent judgment and initiative, you
may have additional responsibilities in working within a crew planting and
maintaining trees. All duties must be performed in accordance with the
Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Town policies, procedures and
practices. You must be physically capable to perform manual outdoor labour
in all weather conditions and safely lift up to 22.7kg or 50 lbs. 

 

.        Enrolled in a masters program or a senior level undergraduate
working towards a university degree in forest conservation, environmental
science, geography or planning discipline or enrolled in a College program
in Arboriculture or a related field near diploma completion or recent
graduate.

.        Ability to accurately identify trees, understand their
characteristics and environmental needs/ tolerances

.        Ability to identify common insect and disease pests of trees, their
life cycles, and control measures using IPM

.        Previous Urban Forestry tree maintenance/planting work experience

.        Knowledge of municipal government processes, responsibilities and
organization

.        Effective written and verbal communication skills are essential

.        Excellent ability to interact with public on tree issues

.        Strong working knowledge of spreadsheet, database, word-processing,
presentation programs and GIS/GPS computer inventory applications

.        Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License

.        Drivers abstract from the MTO must be provided upon hire

.        Ability to work after hours or weekends when necessary 

 

HOURS OF WORK:          40 hour work week (Monday to Friday)

RATE OF PAY:                $15.50 to $17.75 / hour
