[CANUFNET] Tree Planting Distances

Hi Fletcher,

 

We don’t have a document on line that provides this information, but I can summarize for you the guidelines for tree planting that we use when reviewing Landscape Plans in the City of Ottawa:

*	Maintain a minimum distance of 3 metres from all hydro transformers
*	Maintain a minimum distance of 7 metres between trees
*	Maintain a minimum distance from any walkway, driveway, fence, sound wall of 1.5 meters
*	Maintain a minimum of 2.5 metres form the curb for deciduous trees and 4.5 metres for coniferous trees 
*	Maintain a minimum distance of 2.5 metres from fire hydrants and no planting in front of hydrants
*	Maintain a minimum of 10 metres form bus shelters and community mail boxes

 

I would be interested in what other jurisdictions do as well.

Hello All,

 

The Corporation of Delta is reviewing the distances and tolerances for tree installations within the municipal boulevard. This includes planting near sidewalks, curbs, driveways, intersections, crosswalks, lamp standards, underground utilities, etc.  Planting details in regards to soil depth/volume and root barrier requirements are also of interest.

 

I would appreciate the opportunity to  compare various municipal policies or bylaws that regulate tree installations. Please send PDF files or links to documents that are generally accepted by urban forest professionals and have proven effective towards minimizing infrastructure conflicts.
