We have also used recycled rubber mats around trees in Kelowna. We've
tried the round rubber mats in various sizes and we also had some custom
sizes made for square tree wells in sidewalks. Overall they have been
successful, they don't completely eliminate weeds (you can get some
weeds coming up in the cracks and seams around the mats) but they
significantly reduce weeds and also seem to help with water retention
around the tree.

We conducted a trial using the rubber pieces (not really a mulch as
advertised) and rubber mats in our tree wells. The pieces were much
more expensive and tended to scatter due to mower action, the mats were
much less expensive and by and large did the job. We have a report that
we can provide to those who are interested, contact Greg Ward at
