I think the two EAB documents that the Society of Municipal Arborists has recently released are essential reading for the municipal urban forest manager.

Past SMA President Bob Benjamin Receives Arbor Day Award

[Image of Bob Benjamin]Nebraska City, Neb. (April 24, 2012) - Retired Chicago forester Bob Benjamin was the recipient of a 2012 Arbor Day Award in honor of his outstanding contribution to tree planting, conservation and stewardship.

Benjamin of Lombard, Illinois, was one of 16 individuals and organizations recognized by the Foundation at the annual Arbor Day Awards ceremony held at Lied Lodge & Conference Center, located at Arbor Day Farm in Nebraska City, Nebraska, on Saturday, April 28.

Benjamin received the Lawrence Enersen Award in recognition of his positive impact on the environment and lifelong commitment to tree planting and conservation at the local level.

As a 33-year Chicago Bureau of Forestry employee, Benjamin guided the decisions that have made the Windy City a model for tree care and urban beauty. Benjamin wrote the city's first tree planting manual, assisting city staff, residents and business owners with the "how to" of proper planting and care. The manual served a basis for the street guide portion of Chicago's landscape ordinance. Benjamin was also a strong proponent of planting trees in parking lots, years before the "heat-island effect" was widely discussed.

He has been active in his field at the national and international level, serving as historian and a member of the planning team for the Society of Municipal Arborists and a liaison to the International Society of Arboriculture.

"Many people take for granted how friendly Chicago is to trees and people, but it's leaders like Bob Benjamin who helped make it happen," said John Rosenow, founder and chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. "Bob's strategic approach to urban tree care is a model for others to emulate."

Since 1972, the Arbor Day Foundation has recognized the inspiring and life-changing work of leading environmental stewards and tree planters through the annual Arbor Day Awards.

Award winners from previous years include the late Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall, veteran newsman Bill Kurtis, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Mary Kay, Inc. This year, in addition to honoring Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley with a Vision Award, A Legacy of Partnership Award was presented to the United States Forest Service.

SMA Announces:
Emerald Ash Borer Position Paper & Toolkit

[Image of Recruiter]As Emerald Ash Borer continues to ravage the ash populations of many North American communities, the SMA Board, under the leadership of President John McNeil and with the help of the SMA Past Presidents' Council, has undertaken to provide our members with the greatest possible range of information to assist in planning for the tiny, green pest.

The Board has approved a Position Paper<http://www.urban-forestry.com> on the topic of EAB, with background info, recommendations, and listings of options. It is a must-read for any municipal arborist in the current or future range of EAB.

We have also prepared an "EAB Toolbox" flyer<http://www.urban-forestry.com>. This 2-page handout is designed to give you and your constituents a brief overview of the various management options available. It's in PDF format, so you can easily download, print, and share it with anyone you think might need to read it.

Finally, we have established a page of EAB Web Links, designed to assist you in your planning and response by providing other valuable tools and the most up-to-date information possible.
