[CANUFNET] salvaging urban wood

In Toronto, Sean Gorham owns and operates www.urbantreesalvage.com His work
is amazing! Check it out.
We at LEAF have been advocating for more urban wood salvage, including ash,
with preference for highest possible use (ie furniture). Sean feels the two
big barriers are CFIA shipping restrictions on ash (it can be done once wood
is dried/processed, etc but requires very expensive permits) and local
demand/market for the products because they are more expensive than IKEA
furniture! Today I am meeting with Rob McMonagale of Economic Development
&Culture, City of Toronto. He is exploring options for urban wood use and
has issued an RFQ that some of you may be interested in responding to. I
will forward it to the list. The deadline was Dec 4 but you could probably
inquire as to whether they might extend the deadline.

Hello all,

Just wondering if anyone out there knows about any small-scale mills
operating locally in the GTA, preferably (but not necessarily) sawing up
lumber from salvaged ash trees. Interested in making some furniture; would
be great to use our beleaguered local ash.

Thanks!

Hi Alex,
What about trying the City? It has taken down numerous Ash trees along the
Danforth and I wonder if there would be salvagable wood.

Happy Winter Solstice!
