[CANUFNET] Raising the Profile of Urban Forestry in Ontario / Rehausser le profil de la foresterie urbaine en Ontario

Hello ,

In the course of researching and developing our project , we see a lack of
integration of all aspects of managing the complete cycle of the urban
forest. ( not just planting trees ).

Many cites bear heavy costs to plant trees and maintain their urban
forests.... (with little to no monetary return and sometimes with
off-gassing, composting problems.)

We are promoting /facilitating a “closed loop” system where all stages are
integrated , including ;

· Appropriate species selection

· growing, seedling propagation

· planting, growing, pruning-for-value, maintaining,

· biomass collection,

· harvesting, and

· wood processing (powered with renewable energy)

We welcome feedback and inquiries. ( weblink below)

Hello,

It may be worth noting that in Premier Wynne’s mandate letter to the new
Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, made public for the first time,
one of the points appears particularly relevant to urban forestry:

· “Working with municipalities and other partners to promote urban
forestry. Your goal is to work with these partners to plant one million
trees in urban areas as part of our commitment to plant 50 million trees
provincewide.”

Folks may wish to ponder on this initiative.

Bohdan Kowalyk, R.P.F.

Raising the Profile of Urban Forestry in Ontario

By Peter Wynnyczuk, CUFN Ontario Representative

October 7, 2014

The Ontario Region of the Canadian Urban Forest has been busy trying to
maintain and enhance the urban forest. Several organizations have been
involved in trying to raise the profile of the urban forest, both
cooperatively and independently by various communications means within the
scope for the organizations to their existing and new audiences.

After an unprecedented winter ice storm that affected millions of residents
and the continuing challenge in this region, is the Emerald Ash Borer, EAB.
It is spreading quickly primarily due to the lack of coordination between
the 4 levels of government in Ontario for this federally regulated and
managed issue.

The engagement of the public and government officials is a challenging
process in this age of changing priorities of the communities and government
policies, but through the continued efforts of the Organizations in urban
and rural forestry there is more positive attention being paid to the
importance of trees in our communities.

As now there now appears a greater Federal interest being conveyed, this may
have a positive effect on the efforts made so far by the lower tier
Governments and NGO’s on raising the awareness of the benefits of the urban
forest. This is through, activities such as publications, newspaper
articles, tree walks, paddle events, presentations, media articles, tree
planting events, and student engagement events.

We look forward to engaging and energizing the movement to raise the profile
of Urban Forestry in Ontario and the myriad of benefits they provide in our
communities for future generations.
