The Atlantic Urban Forestry Collective began mobilizing urban forestry groups in 2014 that were committed to sharing the national perspective of the Canadian Urban Forest Network<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=c7nf56xab.0.0.9ltbtyiab.0&id=preview&r=3&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cufn.ca%2F> (CUFN) by highlighting the benefits of urban forests through research, education and information exchange with municipalities large and small, forestry organizations, universities teaching forest management, landscape companies, planning commissions, nurseries, developers, forestry pest organizations, department of natural resources, utility companies, architects, certified arborists associations, model forests, and tree care companies to name a few.
The Collective's first urban forest workshop was held in Moncton, NB, in November 2014 focusing on the planning for climate, insect and disease in urban forests. Over 125 people attended from various Atlantic Provinces - the guest speaker from the City of Mississauga highlighted the efforts taken by the municipality to combat emerald ash borer, the cost of the program and how this pest changed the landscape of their community. The statement "this pest is just a day's drive away from your municipality" sent home a message to the group to go back home and look at management plans and know where your ash trees are located and monitor the health of these species over time. The feeling of the participants attending was that it is not a question of whether this pest reaches the community - rather, it is when - and to be prepared is critical to the success of the program. This workshop was the beginning of continued information exchange, new partnerships, and sharing of local conferences and meetings relating to climate change, managing forests and forest health across the Maritimes.

In September 2015 the Collective partnered with the International Society of Arboriculture's Atlantic Chapter of Arborists meeting held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where over 65 participants travelled across the Atlantic region to take part, another successful gathering and networking opportunity.

The Collective agreed after reviewing survey results that a two-day workshop would work best in the future. The first day would include updates on all new research and urban forest activities taken place over the year and the second day would be outdoors gaining insight into urban forest management programs across the various municipalities. Workshops would be held in different provinces each year, on the off year of the Canadian Urban Forest Conference<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=c7nf56xab.0.0.9ltbtyiab.0&id=preview&r=3&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cufn.ca%2F%23%21canadian-urban-forest-conference-cufc%2Fcpks> (CUFC). The next CUFC will be held from September 25-29, 2016, in Laval, Quebec.

Our next workshop will be in the fall of 2017 in PEI. As the Atlantic Regional Representative, I am pleased to report that a request has gone out to members to increase participation in the planning of this event with great success. Looking forward to another exciting year!

Activités et orientations futures de l'Atlantic Urban Forestry Collective

L'Atlantic Urban Forestry Collective a commencé en 2014 à mobiliser les groupes de foresterie urbaine qui voulaient partager la perspective nationale du Réseau canadien de la forêt urbaine (RCFU<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=c7nf56xab.0.0.9ltbtyiab.0&id=preview&r=3&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rcfu.ca%2F>) en faisant connaître les bienfaits des forêts urbaines à l'aide de recherche, d'éducation et de partage d'information avec, entre autres, de petites et grosses municipalités, organismes de foresterie, universités enseignant la gestion forestière, entreprises d'aménagement paysager, commissions de planification, pépinières, promoteurs immobiliers, organismes de lutte contre les ravageurs forestiers, départements de ressources naturelles, entreprises de services publics, architectes, associations d'arboristes agréés, représentants de forêts modèles et entreprises d'entretien des arbres.

Le premier atelier sur la forêt urbaine de la Collective a eu lieu à Moncton (N.-B.) en novembre 2014 et portait sur la planification en fonction du climat, des insectes et des maladies dans notre forêt urbaine. Plus de 125 personnes provenant de diverses provinces de l'Atlantique ont assisté à l'atelier et le conférencier invité de la ville de Mississauga a décrit les efforts déployés par cette municipalité pour lutter contre l'agrile du frêne, les coûts du programme et comment ce ravageur a modifié le paysage de la collectivité. L'énoncé « l'agrile du frêne est seulement à une journée de route de votre municipalité » a bien fait passer le message aux membres du groupe d'examiner soigneusement leurs plans de gestion, de confirmer où se trouvent leurs frênes et de surveiller la santé de ces arbres. Les participants de l'atelier ont été convaincus qu'il ne s'agissait pas de décider si ce ravageur pourrait affecter leur collectivité mais plutôt quand cela se produirait, et qu'il fallait se préparer d'avance pour assurer le succès du programme de lutte contre l'agrile du frêne. Cet atelier a commencé un processus d'échange d'information, entraîné la formation de nouveaux partenariats et causé une diffusion des renseignements provenant de conférences et de rencontres sur le changement climatique, la gestion forestière et la santé des forêts à l'échelle des Maritimes.

En septembre 2015, la Collective s'est jointe à la section atlantique des arboristes de l'International Society of Arboriculture lors d'une rencontre qui a eu lieu à Halifax (N.-É.) et à laquelle ont assisté plus de 65 participants provenant d'un peu partout dans l'Atlantique. Ce fut une autre excellente occasion pour les participants de se rencontrer et de réseauter.

La Collective a accepté, après avoir examiné les résultats d'un sondage, qu'un atelier de deux jours serait une meilleure option dans l'avenir. La première journée permettrait de diffuser de l'information sur les nouvelles recherches et activités de foresterie urbaine qui se sont déroulées pendant l'année et la deuxième journée aurait lieu à l'extérieur pour se renseigner davantage sur les programmes de gestion de la forêt urbaine dans diverses municipalités. L'atelier serait organisé dans une province différente tous les deux ans, au cours de l'année où il n'y a pas de Conférence canadienne sur la forêt urbaine (CCFU)<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=c7nf56xab.0.0.9ltbtyiab.0&id=preview&r=3&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rcfu.ca%2F%23%21conference%2Fcd4l>. La prochaine CCFU aura lieu du 25 au 29 septembre 2016 à Laval (Québec).

Notre prochain atelier sera offert à l'automne 2017 sur l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard. En tant que représentante de la région de l'Atlantique, je voudrais signaler qu'un avis a été envoyé aux membres pour les encourager à participer davantage à la planification de cet événement et que cet avis a obtenu beaucoup de succès. La prochaine année devrait apporter plusieurs réalisations intéressantes!
