Canadian Urban Forest Network: Pacific Region Update

Urban Forestry continues to evolve and grow in British Columbia.  We are a diverse region with respect to climate, communities and trees.  Across this broad spectrum we are seeing increased awareness of the critical role that Urban Forestry plays in our communities.  One tangible result of this increasing awareness is the growing list of communities that have either completed or are in the process of completing Urban Forest Strategies or Plans.

Canada's First Undergraduate Urban Forestry Program
Just last fall the University of British Columbia launched Canada's first undergraduate Urban Forestry degree program.  Students of this program have already begun entering the workforce in the Region in co-op positions.  It will be exciting to watch the growth of this program and see how these graduates help to shape urban forestry within the Region and across the country in the future.

Climate Adaptation
Metro Vancouver, the regional government responsible for Greater Vancouver, is developing a Climate Adaptation Strategy and in 2015 hired a consulting team to work with local Urban Forestry stakeholders on Urban Forest Adaptation Guidelines.  This work involved an analysis of the best climate modelling available for the region to look at the implications for the Urban Forest in the Metro Vancouver area.  Based on these findings, the Guidelines contain comprehensive recommendations for developing and managing the Urban Forest to ensure resiliency in the face of the expected change in climate.  This type of forward planning is a critical piece in Urban Forest management and by doing this work on the regional scale it will provide invaluable guidance to all 21 member municipalities in the Metro Vancouver region.

With the 2016 Canadian Urban Forest Conference (CUFC) in Laval, Quebec, this fall fast approaching it is time for those communities out west hoping to host the 2018 conference to put together their proposals.  The City of Vancouver in partnership with the University of British Columbia are working on a submission for the 2018 conference and are also in discussions with the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture (PNW-ISA) exploring the option of a joint CUFC/PNW-ISA conference.

Pacific Region Moving Forward
Last November saw the first ever CUFN Pacific Region Workshop that was part of a Canada-wide series of workshops funded by TD Bank. This was a successful event that clearly demonstrated a desire to connect and share information amongst urban forestry practitioners in the region.  In light of this interest, we are looking to host a follow-up event this October where we will be looking to identify specific actions that interested individuals are willing to work on to further the goals of the Canadian Urban Forest Strategy within the Pacific Region.  One of the topics we plan to discuss is the potential for a paid part time person to increase the capacity within region and support those volunteering their time on CUFN initiatives. La foresterie urbaine continue d'évoluer et de croître en Colombie-Britannique. Nous sommes une région diversifiée par rapport au climat, les communautés et les arbres. Grace à ce large spectre, nous assistons à une sensibilisation accrue du rôle essentiel que joue la foresterie urbaine dans nos communautés. Un résultat tangible de cette prise de conscience croissante est la liste grandissante des communautés qui ont soit terminé ou sont en train d'achever des plans ou stratégies de la forêt urbaine.

Le premier programme de foresterie urbaine au Canada
L'automne dernier, l'Université de la Colombie-Britannique a lancé le premier programme d'études premier cycle de foresterie urbaine au Canada. Les étudiants de ce programme ont déjà commencé à intégrer le marché du travail dans des postes de stages dans la région. Il sera intéressant de voir la croissance de ce programme et de voir comment ces diplômés façonnent le domaine de la foresterie urbaine dans la région et dans tout le pays.

Stratégie d'adaptation au climat
Le gouvernement régional responsable de la région de Vancouver (la région métropolitaine de Vancouver) développe une stratégie d'adaptation au climat et a embauché, en 2015, une équipe de consultants pour travailler sur les lignes directrices de la stratégie d'adaptation des forêts urbaines avec les parties prenantes locales de la foresterie urbaine. Ce travail implique une analyse de la meilleure modélisation climatique disponible de la région afin d'examiner les implications sur la forêt urbaine dans la région métropolitaine de Vancouver. Basé sur ces conclusions, les lignes directrices contiennent des recommandations détaillées pour le développement et la gestion de la forêt urbaine pour assurer la résilience face aux changements climatiques anticipés. Ce type de planification à long terme est un élément essentiel dans la gestion de la forêt urbaine. Ce travail à l'échelle régionale fournira des conseils précieux pour l'ensemble des 21 municipalités membres de la région métropolitaine de Vancouver.

Considérant que l'automne et la Conférence canadienne sur la forêt urbaine 2016 à Laval, Québec approche à grand pas, il est temps pour les communautés de l'ouest qui prévoient accueillir la conférence 2018 de préparer leur demande. La Ville de Vancouver en partenariat avec l'Université de la Colombie-Britannique préparent une demande pour accueillir la conférence 2018 et sont également en discussions avec le Pacific Northwest Chapter - International Society of Arboriculture (PNW-ISA) afin d'explorer la possibilité d'une conférence conjointe entre la CCFU et le PNW-ISA.

La région Pacifique va de l'avant
Ce novembre dernier a eu lieu le premier atelier de la CCFU dans la région du Pacifique. Cet atelier faisait partie de l'ensemble d'une série pan-canadienne d'ateliers financés par la Banque TD. Ce fut un événement réussi qui a clairement démontré une volonté de se connecter et de partager l'information entre les professionnels de la foresterie urbaine dans la région. À la lumière de cet intérêt, nous cherchons à organiser un événement de suivi en octobre durant lequel nous chercherons à identifier les actions spécifiques pouvant être prises par les personnes intéressées pour faire avancer les objectifs de la Stratégie canadienne sur la forêt urbaine au sein de la région Pacifique. L'un des sujets que nous prévoyons entamer est le potentiel d'une personne à temps partiel payé à augmenter la capacité au sein de la région et de soutenir les gens qui travaillent en tant que bénévole sur les initiatives de la RCFU.
