2017 Updates for the Pacific Region

In addition to all of the great work in urban forestry that happens day-to-day in communities across the province of British Columbia, there are some key initiatives that are underway in our Pacific region.

2018 Canadian Urban Forest Conference
It has been official since September 2016 that Vancouver will be the host city for the 2018 Canadian Urban Forest Conference (CUFC). The planning is well underway and the 2018 CUFC will be unique in that it will be the first joint congress with the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture and the Urban Tree Diversity Conference. This congress promises to bring together a full range of Urban Forestry professionals and practitioners in a way that has not happened before in Canada. Watch for updates on this exciting conference later this year.

CUFN - Pacific Region Steering Committee
The momentum continues to build within the Pacific region with the formation of a Canadian Urban Forest Network (CUFN) Pacific Region Steering Committee and the development of a 2017 Action Plan. One of the key items in the Action Plan is the establishment of a part time Regional Assistant to assist the Steering Committee. It is exciting to say that the part time Regional Assistant role has been established and we are lucky to have Laura Cottle stepping into this role. Laura is a Registered Professional Forester with a strong background in program coordination and education. The Pacific Region Steering Committee is looking forward to further increasing the existing momentum with Laura now in place.

UBC Urban Forestry Program

Canada's first undergraduate Urban Forestry program at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver is growing quickly with 50 new students in 2016, more than 90 students enrolled, and 94 students registered in the Urban Forestry 100 course this year. 2018 will see the first Urban Forestry graduates and the next step is the development of a one year professional Master of Urban Forestry. This development is underway and an extensive market survey has shown great interest both in Canada and internationally. The focus of the program will be topics such as environmental leadership and governance, project management, entrepreneurship, urban forest benefit assessment and strategic urban forest management. The tentative launch date for the Master of Urban Forestry program is September 2019, pending Ministerial approval.

Nouvelles de la région du Pacifique pour 2017

En plus de tout le travail remarquable qui est effectué quotidiennement dans le domaine de la foresterie urbaine un peu partout en Colombie-Britannique, il y a aussi quelques initiatives clés qui se déroulent dans notre région du Pacifique.

Conférence canadienne sur la forêt urbaine de 2018
Il a été annoncé officiellement en septembre 2016 que Vancouver serait la ville hôte de la Conférence canadienne sur la forêt urbaine (CCFU) de 2018. La planification va bon train et la CCFU de 2018 aura un aspect unique puisqu'elle fera partie du premier congrès conjoint organisé avec la section du nord-ouest du Pacifique de l'International Society of Arboriculture et la conférence d'Urban Tree Diversity. Ce congrès permettra de rassembler un vaste éventail de professionnels et praticiens de la foresterie urbaine dans un format qui n'a jamais été vu au Canada. Nous fournirons des détails sur la conférence plus tard dans l'année.

RCFU - Comité directeur de la région du Pacifique
La région du Pacifique du Réseau canadien de la forêt urbaine (RCFU) poursuit sa lancée avec la formation d'un comité directeur et l'élaboration d'un plan d'action pour 2017. Un des points clés du plan d'action était la création d'un poste à temps partiel d'adjoint régional pour aider le comité directeur. Nous sommes heureux d'annoncer que Mme Laura Cottle, forestière professionnelle inscrite, a accepté de combler ce poste. Mme Cottle détient une expérience solide en coordination de programme et éducation. Le comité directeur de la région du Pacifique a bien hâte de poursuivre ses activités avec l'aide de Mme Cottle.

Programme de foresterie urbaine de l'UBC
Le premier programme canadien de foresterie urbaine offert aux étudiants du premier cycle universitaire à l'Université de la Colombie-Britannique (UBC) - Vancouver - gagne rapidement en popularité avec 50 nouveaux étudiants en 2016, plus de 90 étudiants inscrits au programme et 94 étudiants suivant le cours Urban Forestry 100 cette année. On verra des diplômés en foresterie urbaine sortir de l'UBC pour la première fois en 2018. La prochaine étape est de créer un programme d'un an de maîtrise en foresterie urbaine. Ce programme est en cours d'élaboration et des recherches approfondies du marché ont révélé un vif intérêt à ce sujet au Canada et à l'échelle internationale. Le programme portera entre autres sur la gouvernance et le leadership environnemental, la gestion des projets, l'entrepreneuriat, l'évaluation des bienfaits de la forêt urbaine et la gestion stratégique de la forêt urbaine. La date provisoire de lancement du nouveau programme de maîtrise en foresterie urbaine est septembre 2019, sous réserve de l'approbation ministérielle.
