This Atlantic Report will feature the urban forest management program that is taking place in Truro Nova Scotia, under the direction of Andrew Williams. 2017 has seen many forestry related programs in which Truro celebrates urban forestry practices and improves community partnerships and stewardship of trees. It is the third year of their King Street Community Gardens Project with funding from "CN ECoConnexions From the Ground Up Municipal Greening Program" totaling over 65 planters with 15 of those being for mobility challenged gardeners - a very innovative idea for others.

In Nova Scotia, Arbor Day has many planting events taking place in all cities, towns, villages, and communities province wide, Truro uses the first full week of May to plant trees and other plantings the entire week giving them a head start on summer. This year also celebrates the 45th Anniversary of the Truro Tree Commission a success story all of its own as they realized early on the importance of trees in the downtown and elsewhere.

This year they participated in the CFIA surveys on emerald ash borer by placing 4 green panel monitoring traps in various locations throughout the town, a way to stay proactive in knowing what is moving through the area. Annual tree planting programs will continue with a rebate offer of 50% off the purchase price paid to a maximum of $50.00 per tree up to 10 trees per property per season.    This program is well received from the community each year. Another funding proposal was awarded to Truro by the CN Eco Connections Program to convert an impervious asphalt parking lot into a new tree lawn along with various plantings to assist with storm water management in the downtown core.
The town is working with DeepRoot Canada in an effort to incorporate Silva Cells into the design to both increase rooting area as well as assist with storm water management.

Two public tree planting events took place in June sponsored by Tree Canada, the Federal government and CN as part of the Tree to Our Nature and Canada 150 Legacy Programs. These sponsored programs will add trees for shade to a newly renovated natural play ground in Victoria Park and to commemorate Canada's 150th Birthday at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre. Truro is fortunate to have an Urban Forestry Coordinator on staff leading the programs mentioned above and making the difference in a town destined to showcase urban forestry practices over time. Andrew is passionate about trees and the work he does can be seen by everyone who visits the town.   He is also part of the planning team for the Atlantic Urban Forest Collective working on our next Urban Forest Conference in Fredericton Nov 7th and 8th 2017 at Crowne Plaza. He is also Chairing the Committee planning the Atlantic Canada Forest Health Workshop January 16-18 2018 in Amherst Nova Scotia, mark that date as well on your calendar.

Rapport sur la forêt urbaine de la région de l'Atlantique pour juin 2017

Le présent rapport pour la région de l'Atlantique porte sur le programme de gestion de la forêt urbaine qui est mis en œuvre à Truro (Nouvelle-Écosse) sous la direction d'Andrew Williams.

Plusieurs programmes liés à la foresterie, qui célèbrent des pratiques de foresterie urbaine et améliorent les partenariats communautaires et l'intendance environnementale des arbres, se déroulent à Truro en 2017.

Le projet de jardinage communautaire sur la rue King, financé par le programme de verdissement municipal ÉcoConnexions CN - De terre en air, en est à sa troisième année et comprend plus de 65 boîtes de plantation, dont 15 sont accessibles aux jardiniers à mobilité réduite - une idée novatrice à reproduire.
En Nouvelle-Écosse, la Journée de l'arbre (Arbor Day) comprend plusieurs événements de plantation qui ont lieu dans diverses collectivités de villes et villages à l'échelle de la province. Truro réserve la première semaine entière de mai à la plantation d'arbres et d'autres plantes, ce qui lui permet de partir l'été du bon pied. Cette année marque également le 45e anniversaire de la Truro Tree Commission (Commission arboricole de Truro) - un véritable succès pour la ville qui a réalisé très tôt l'importance des arbres pour son centre-ville et d'autres lieux.

Truro a participé cette année aux enquêtes de l'Agence canadienne d'inspection des aliments sur l'agrile du frêne en installant quatre panneaux verts pour détecter les infestations à divers emplacements de la ville. C'est un moyen proactif de surveiller la présence de cet insecte dans la région.
Les programmes annuels de plantation d'arbres se poursuivront avec une offre de rabais de 50 % du coût d'achat d'un arbre jusqu'à un maximum de 50 $/arbre pour un nombre maximal de 10 arbres par propriété pour chaque saison de plantation. Ce programme est très apprécié par la collectivité chaque année. Des fonds ont également été versés à Truro dans le cadre du programme ÉcoConnexions CN pour convertir un terrain de stationnement en asphalte étanche en une nouvelle pelouse arborée comprenant diverses plantes pour aider à gérer les eaux pluviales dans le centre-ville. La ville collabore avec DeepRoot Canada pour intégrer des cadres souterrains Silva Cell dans la conception de cette pelouse afin d'accroître la surface d'enracinement et de favoriser la gestion des eaux pluviales.

Deux événements publics de plantation d'arbres ont eu lieu en juin. Ces événements ont été parrainés par Arbres Canada, le gouvernement fédéral et CN dans le cadre du programme Vert les arbres et la nature et des programmes du patrimoine du 150e anniversaire de la Confédération canadienne. Ces programmes permettront d'ajouter des arbres d'ombrage dans un terrain de jeux naturel récemment rénové du parc Victoria et de commémorer ce 150e anniversaire au centre communautaire Rath Eastlink.

Truro a la chance d'avoir un coordonnateur de foresterie urbaine au sein de son personnel pour diriger les programmes mentionnés plus haut et aider la ville à promouvoir ses pratiques de foresterie urbaine à long terme. Andrew Williams est passionné par les arbres et ses réalisations peuvent être admirées par tous les visiteurs de la ville. Il fait aussi partie de l'équipe de l'Atlantic Urban Forest Collective qui planifie présentement notre prochaine conférence sur la forêt urbaine qui se déroulera les 7 et 8 novembre prochain au Crowne Plaza de Fredericton. Andrew préside également le comité qui planifie l'atelier sur la santé des forêts de la région canadienne de l'Atlantique; cet atelier aura lieu du 16 au 18 janvier 2018 à Amherst en Nouvelle-Écosse.
