[CANUFNET] Tree Maintenance of City trees

Hi Paul (and all),

Toronto allows residents to engage private contractors to perform work on
City trees. I am not sure if there is a 'roster' of approved companies per
se, but the resident and the company must complete and submit an 'Agreement
for Contractors to Perform Arboricultural Services on City Owned Street
Trees' (available here:
https://www1.toronto.ca/city_of_toronto/parks_forestry__recreation/urban_for
estry/files/pdf/contractor_services_agreement_information.pdf)

According to this agreement, "All contractors must be pre-approved by the
City." It also states, "all work is to be undertaken and completed at the
sole expense of the property owner. All agreements for payment shall be as
between the contractor and the property owner and the Contractor shall
receive no compensation, remuneration or reimbursement by the City of
Toronto whatsoever."

The Town of Oakville has a similar process
(https://www.oakville.ca/assets/general%20-%20residents/ArboriculturalAgreem
ent.pdf) to allow residents to hire a company to prune, fertilize or inject
(with TreeAzin) Town-owned trees.

Hope that helps a little. If there are any City or Town staff on the list
(or anybody with more information) hopefully they can help further.

Kind regards,

Alex

Dear CANUFNET members,

During a recent Council meeting, one of our councillors asked whether our
City would entertain allowing homeowners to engage and hire the private tree
care sector for tree maintenance of City trees as an option to expedite the
tree maintenance process. In other words, if the homeowner didn't want to
wait for the City to provide the maintenance of the city tree (which could
take between 6 months to a year or more to complete), they could have the
option to call a tree care contractor directly and theoretically, have the
work done much sooner.

So my question(s) to the group is, does your City, Municipality or Region
allow for this, and if so;

a) Do you provide a approved 'roster list' so to speak of who they can
use to have the work completed?

b) What checks and balances do you have in place to ensure that the
work is done by one of the approved vendors?

c) Does the homeowner pay for this service directly and 'out of
pocket' or does your program reimburse them partially or fully for the
completed service?

Look forward to hearing from many of you. Thank you.
