Birch (Betula), Alder (Alnus), Cottonwood (Populus) and Willow (Salix) would be some
of my favorite choices for floodplains. Red Maple (Acer rubrum) too apparently does well;
as it is commonly called a “swamp maple.”

Here is a booklet from the USDA with some good, clear diagrams.
