The City of Coquitlam is the sixth largest city in BC, home to more than 140,000 residents. Our municipality continues to grow through the development of our green spaces, arts and culture, urban design and state-of-the-art transportation system. Our brand is built on managing our resources in a responsible and sustainable manner, while supporting a vibrant, growing regional urban centre.
The City is currently recruiting for an Urban Forestry Services Supervisor to join our team. As part of a dynamic team in the Urban Forestry section in the Parks Department, the Urban Forestry Services Supervisor plays a key role in managing our Urban Forest including 2,000 acres of natural spaces. These natural spaces are highly valued by the community and are a refuge for vibrant wildlife populations and healthy runs of wild pacific salmon.
Reporting to the Urban Forestry and Parks Services Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for the technical, supervisory and administrative work in coordinating tree protection through the development application process and the tree cutting permitting process. An incumbent supervises the work of subordinates engaged in forestry and tree risk assessment work, responds to public complaints and enquiries on tree-related matters and attempts to resolve conflicts within defined policies, examines tree cutting permits and development plans and makes recommendations regarding removal, retention and care of trees according to City policy. In addition, an incumbent is also responsible for conducting research, providing advice and recommendations to senior staff and elected officials on tree management programs, policies and issues. Considerable independence and judgment are exercised in the administration of the section while complex problems or policy matters are discussed with a superior who reviews work performance for effective and efficient service delivery and attainment of goals.
The ideal candidate will have a University degree in forestry or natural resource management or post-secondary diploma in forestry or natural resource management, plus five years related experience or three years related experience combined with an undergraduate degree in forestry or natural resource management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
