See Page 195 in Up By Roots. I believe that you can build a very substantial rod over tree roots Just have to build up with no cutting of existing grade and be vigilant in site inspections and specification to keep compaction out of the rootzone. But the engineer will go bonkers. Geogrids are the most important part of the section detailed.
