[CANUFNET] Soil Volume Policy

Hi Brian:

Judging from what’s visible in the assortment of photos, street trees are still being planted in relatively small hardscape cutouts - tree pits. Also, it looks as if the hardscape is standard concrete as opposed to pervious or porous pavers or driest flags.

Has any accommodation been made for connecting curbside tree plantings underground via root paths or soil trenches which would give the trees a much larger rootable soil volume although still sealed?

Thanks
Naomi

M minimum soil volume requirement for all trees within the municipal road allowance (20 cu. M for shared trenches). The development of a policy rather than a guideline will force developers and utility providers to incorporate these necessary volumes into their designs at the outset, rather than an afterthought.
