Hi everyone
A short update following Élaine Éthier’s email.
The non-profit in charge of the private plantations in Montréal is still in operation under the shorter name of Soverdi (for Société de verdissement de Montréal) - web site Soverdi.org<http://Soverdi.org>. From 2012 on, a new program called Plan Canopée is aiming at 300 000 new trees for the Island of Montréal, before the end of 2025 (or a bit later…). City takes 2/5 part of it with a goal of 120 000, while Soverdi has the larger share (3/5) at 180 000. For the past four years, the planting rate of Soverdi has been over 10 000/year (all trees above 1,70m), the total of new private trees is nearing 60 000 at the end of 2019.
2019 has been a turning point with the involvement of a number of larger corporations and institutions such as CN (since 2017), TD Bank, Hydro-Québec, Lafarge Canada, Port of Montréal and others, worth around 4 M$ for the upcoming years, answering Soverdi’s call. These efforts almost equal the City contribution to Soverdi which is more than 1M$/year.
Part of the success is attributed to Soverdi's master plan which identifies five target sectors with specific approaches for each : residential, health care centres, éducation, cultural institutions, industries/power centres. For the residential sector, there are two sales/year: spring and fall, the multi-species offer being relayed by twenty-some environmental neighbourhood organisations. Around ten species are offered at 25$ (leaf trees) or 35$ (evergreens). This year’s sale totalled 3 273.
Development of the plan was somewhat unusual since the City asked Soverdi to develop the master plan, in recognition to the organisation professionalism. Cooperation between both is strong. Soverdi currently acts as Tree Canada Community advisor for Western Québec.
