I love trees in the winter. There is a certain quality, a certain beauty to them at this time of year. And though some may say that trees look a bit eerie or even sad in winter, I find that this season offers a unique opportunity to truly “see” trees.

Tree TLC: five winter tree care tips
While we may not be thinking of them as they slumber through winter, there are still ways to help our trees get through the dormant season and thrive in spring.

1. Prevent snow pile ups

Trees well adapted to Canadian winters love snow. Snow insulates delicate roots from desiccating winds and freezing temperatures and good snow loads also mean wet soil for that important spring flush, when buds explode into flower and leaves push out.

J’adore les arbres durant l’hiver. Ils arborent une beauté singulière à cette époque de l’année. Certains trouvent qu’ils ont l’air un peu étrange voire tristes en hiver, mais pour ma part je trouve que cette saison offre une opportunité unique de réellement « voir » les arbres.

On pourrait avoir tendance à les oublier lorsqu’ils sommeillent pendant l’hiver, mais nos arbres peuvent bénéficier de notre aide pour traverser la saison de dormance et être florissants au printemps.

1. Évitez les amas de neige

Les arbres qui sont bien adaptés aux hivers canadiens adorent la neige. Elle isole leurs délicates racines des vents desséchants et des températures glaciales et de grandes quantités de neige sont également synonymes d’un sol humide, essentiel pour la période de croissance printanière, lorsque les bourgeons se transforment en fleurs et que les feuilles poussent.

Neuf villes canadiennes ont été reconnues par le biais du programme Tree Cities of the World par l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture (FAO) et la Fondation Arbor Day.
