You can check with Vince D’Elia at TRCA who plants 1000’s with no added soil, adds mulch mats etc. We have provided coded aluminum tags for 10% of his trees for follow up measurements for years.
This allowed him to check the methodology used for greater success rates
He now has years of data - enough to change his methodology - especially around protocols of clearing root collar area and watering.
