Hello Jessika,

I think the best thing for large roots would be to rock armour on either side of the tree roots to create a bit of a rock mosaic that extends above the roots. Then use mineral soil as a mortar to hold it all together and pack the surface down. If built well it will look like a rock puzzle and will become and interesting trail feature that can last for many years. For a collection of smaller roots I would create a rock retaining wall using the biggest stones you can find on the outside edge of the trail. You can then begin raising the trail surface up above the roots with mineral soil.

A couple words of caution. Do not use woodchips or other organic materials for a trail surface as they will break down and turn into mud, which no one wants to ride or walk through. Organics will also trap moisture and negatively impact drainage off trail, leading to puddling and eventually trail widening/braiding. It is best to use mineral soil located underneath the organic soil layer to cap your trail surfaces unless you can import gravels onto site easily.

Good luck.

They will be gradually damaged if left exposed to bike and foot traffic. Best to bridge them or armour them with aggregate, soil or wood mulch.

Hello,

Does anyone have experience or thoughts on exposed tree roots within mountain biking trails and whether more damage is caused by covering them up with soil or leaving exposed and riding over them?

Thank-you!
Jessika

Hi Jessika
The international Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) produces some good trail building resources that its members have access to. You might have some members with mtb trail building expertise in town that it would be God to reach out to ahead of time.

Depending on slope and drainage, you can either use large natural features (logs, rocks) to guide traffic around the erosion, or use rock armoring to get the riding surface above the roots and give soil something to bond to.

Jessika,

I would say that is depends on how much you cover them and also how you would plan to contain that soil so it doesn't just disappear again. How often would you plan to go back and repeat this? In any case I would say filling them over will remove the direct physical damage to the roots and be better than "letting it ride".

If you would fill just over the roots with soil and then add wood chips over, that will likely be a good solution. You would then likely have to just replace wood chips every so often.

Just some off the top of the head thoughts.
