You may wish to consider root shearing as well, and staying beyond the tree's zone of rapid taper.
I find this approach to be helpful but not always imperative. Offline I can tell you the 
tool we like to use for the umpteen roots we’ve sheared out of lawns from trees like cottonwood,
cherry, red maple and katsura in particular. As with any impact to trees, one must always consider
species, location, size, age, condition, health, disease (or lack of), etc. Trees and Development (1998), 
which is presently being updated and reprinted, is an excellent guide for root alterations that you may be doing 
to a tree including drainage, backfill, root cutting, grade changes, etc. Hope that helps.
