PhD position, Carleton University: Biodiversity outcomes of urban greening programs

Urban greening programs can support biodiversity and connect people with nature in urban centres. However, the outcomes of grassroots projects are rarely monitored and we have little information on how to maximize co-benefits.

We are looking for a PhD student to join an exciting, collaborative team of researchers, policy-makers, and other NGO partners at Carleton University. The student will lead a study exploring the co-benefits of urban greening for biodiversity and human wellbeing, with a focus on tree planting. The student will have an opportunity to learn to co-develop scientific research, conduct urban field work, and improve conservation policy and practice. The position start date is flexible (September 2024 would be ideal). The student will be supervised by Dr. Rachel Buxton in the Biodiversity Conservation Solutions Lab https://www.biodiversityconservationsolutions.com/

Applications from Canadian students with an MSc degree in conservation/environmental science or a related field are welcome. Other essentials include: strong research, leadership, and communication skills; a desire to make the world a better place for people and nature; and coding in R or Python. Candidates would be required to live in Ottawa. Applicants should send the following to Rachel Buxton (Rachel.Buxton at carleton.ca<mailto:Rachel.Buxton at carleton.ca>) by February 2, 2024: 1) Letter of interest summarizing your experience; 2) Curriculum Vitae; 3) Contact details for three references; and 4) University transcripts (unofficial are fine). Please use the subject line Urban greening application.
