Upcoming Canadian Urban Forest Census

To better understand and benchmark urban forest management programs in Canada, we are conducting an upcoming census of urban forestry activities in municipalities over 10,000 people. This study is based on a similar census of urban forestry conducted in the US; their 78-page final report can be found online by searching “Hauer US Urban Forest Census”.

Our study is conducted through an online survey that includes questions about staffing, budgets, operational cycles and planning, and provincial and federal support. Even if your municipality does not maintain public trees, we would still appreciate hearing from you.

The survey takes approximately 30 to 90 minutes to complete. While this is a considerably long survey, the results will provide the first national overview of Canadian urban forest management programs and allow you to benchmark your program to comparable municipalities. You will also be contributing to the literature on Canadian urban forest management, which will help develop best practices. The results of this study will also be presented at industry conferences. Any publications will be shared with participants who opt to provide their email.

This survey is intended for the person(s) who can best tell us about municipal forestry and tree activities in your municipality. Ideally, this is the person directly responsible for decisions about tree care activities; however, any employee, community volunteer, or elected official that can best respond should do so. If you believe another person in your municipality is better suited, please forward this survey to them. More responses improve the national understanding of Canadian urban forestry.

The survey will be sent to municipalities next week. Recensement des forêts urbaines canadiennes à venir

Afin de mieux comprendre et comparer les programmes de gestion des forêts urbaines au Canada, nous mènerons prochainement un recensement des activités de foresterie urbaine dans les municipalités de plus de 10 000 habitants. Cette initiative s'inspire d’un recensement similaire réalisé aux États-Unis. Leur rapport final de 78 pages est accessible en ligne en recherchant « Hauer US Urban Forest Census ».

Notre étude se déroulera au moyen d'un sondage en ligne comportant des questions sur le personnel, les budgets, les cycles opérationnels, la planification, ainsi que le soutien offert par les gouvernements provincial et fédéral. Même si votre municipalité n'effectue pas l’entretien d'arbres publics, votre participation serait tout de même grandement appréciée.

Le sondage prend environ 30 à 90 minutes à compléter. Bien qu'il soit relativement long, les résultats fourniront le premier portrait national des programmes municipaux de gestion des forêts urbaines au Canada. Vous pourrez également comparer votre programme à celui de municipalités de taille ou de contexte comparable.  Votre participation contribuera par ailleurs à l’avancement des connaissances sur la foresterie urbaine au Canada, ce qui appuiera le développement de pratiques exemplaires. Les résultats seront également présentés lors de conférences sectorielles, et toutes les publications seront partagées avec les participants ayant choisi de fournir leur adresse courriel.

Ce sondage s'adresse à la ou aux personnes les mieux placées pour répondre aux questions portant sur la foresterie municipale et les activités arboricoles de votre municipalité. Idéalement, il s'agit de la personne directement responsable de la planification ou des décisions concernant les activités d'entretien des arbres ; toutefois, tout employé, élu municipale ou bénévole détenant l’information nécessaire est invité à y répondre. Si vous pensez qu'une autre personne au sein de votre municipalité est mieux placée pour répondre, nous vous prions de lui transmettre ce sondage. Un plus grand nombre de réponses permettra d’améliorer la compréhension nationale de la foresterie urbaine au Canada.
