$1.5 Million for Community Outreach


Start revving up your community outreach motors again!

At the Conservation Summit on April 27th, Kevin Flynn, the Parliamentary
Assistant to the Minister of Energy, announced that the Community
Conservation Initiatives program will be offered again with increased
funding for 2007.  The Ministry has confirmed that the funding for the
program will be doubled this year to $1.5 million.

The program was first announced in the Fall of 2006 with $750,000 for
outreach projects running to the end of March, 2007. The program was a
resounding success. In particular, some of the community groups that are
active under the We Conserve banner were able to make personal contact with
thousands of individuals through workshops, home visits and community events
— Eco Superior, Durham Sustain Ability, and Smart Living St Lawrence.

Smart Living St Lawrence signed up over 1,800 people on the Lighten Up
pledge in just over a month of workshops in the St Lawrence neighbourghood
of Toronto. The success of the project was a contributing factor to SLSL
receiving a Green Toronto award. Congratulations!

As with the last round, the Conservation Council stands ready to lend our
material and support to any community outreach project that helps to promote
conservation.
In general, the maximum CCI contribution available to each project is
$50,000. Projects can be up to six months in length. The application
deadline is June 29, 2007. All projects supported by the CCI program must be
completed by no later than March 21, 2008. Final reports are due by March
31, 2008.
