Community Go Green Fund
Well, the community funding for climate change projects was announced today
- $6.6 million over four years for not-for-profit groups at the local and
grassroots level to "educate on global warming, and to run programs in
Ontario communities that reduce greenhouse gases".
The media release is at http://www.ene.gov.on.ca/en/news/2007/081001.php and
you can enter you e-mail address to receive news of the application process
at this site http://www.gogreenontario.ca/cggf.php.

The four year program will create an additional $1.6 million in funding for
NGOs per year.
To put this in perspective, the Canadian
<http://cegn.org/grantmaking/pdf/2001_ON_profile.pdf> Environmental
Grantmakers estimated that there was 377 grants to Ontario activities for a
total of $21.4 million from 24 different funders. The new fund works out to
about an 8% increase in available funding.
Not bad, but also not enough given the increased demand for conservation
programs, the steadily increasing number of groups that are taking on
environmental projects, and the urgency of the task at hand.
However, if it is used strategically, $1.6 million a year can make a big
impact. And therein lies the challenge - for us in the not-for-profit sector
to use a collaborative approach to public outreach, engagement and support;
and for the Ministry to look at a strategic and integrated approach with
common messaging that is disseminated in a variety of innovative ways and
that is connected to support services that will assist people in following
through on their commitment to conserve.
Enough puddle-jumping. We need a river.
Something to work on in September.
Conservation Gets Personal
Are you in?
We Conserve is all about trying to make Ontario better at all different
facets of conservation. It's about lowering our collective environmental
footprint.
This fall, we will be rolling out our five year plan to build a stronger and
united conservation movement in Ontario that will achieve measurable,
large-scale results by the Kyoto deadline of 2012.
The first goal along the way is to get everyone in by 2009 - and we do mean
everyone. We want every individual, family, store, restaurant, business,
workplace, organization and government to have made a commitment to improve
as a conserver.
Our latest campaign kicks off this month (August) with a conserver quiz and
challenge being distributed via The Beer Store's 441 retail stores across
Ontario. Come September, and throughout 2008, we will looking for local
partners, retailers, and membership-based groups that can help us distribute
the I Conserve across Ontario.
We've also redesigned the website to fit the new campaign, with more to
come.
If we can get everyone in Ontario to say "I conserve", then we will have a
strong foundation for all kinds of programs, products, and services that
will help them become even better conservers.
Please take the time to fill out your own quiz at
www.weconserve.ca/iconserve.html.
Thanks,
Chris
