08 Collaborative Priorities

(Reply requested from NGOs and other partners– see below)

Hello everyone,

The next piece of the puzzle is now online at HYPERLINK
"http://www.weconserve.ca/"www.weconserve.ca “We Conserve: 08
Collaborative Priorities” is the summary of our collaborative project
proposals for 2008 – as we see it now. Feel free to add in suggestions and
to let me know how you can help (see below)…

Our proposals flow from the discussion paper on how to strengthen Ontario’s
voluntary sector role in a conservation movement: “Collaborating for
Conservation” – also online. And by tomorrow, you will also be able to view
our overall five year plan for We Conserve, which sets it all in the context
of a united conservation movement.

The interesting thing, as I sit back and look over our proposed activities,
is that we are beginning to demonstrate how a united conservation appeal
might work. There are a number of collaborative proposals in the package
where our partner organizations are taking the lead within their area of
expertise, and their project clearly fills a need within a broad, united
conservation movement. Very neat!

What this also means is that the Council’s role (and my own) will shift to
help raise funds for the entire conservation movement, not just our own
organization. This is a significant shift and a challenge I welcome.

Now, for all of you that read this and say, “Hey, what about us?”, talk to
me! I fully expect this document will grow and evolve into a collaborative
statement of what is needed to grow the voluntary sector role in a
conservation movement: the capacity to engage and support change, the
leadership and expertise on individual issues, and the collaborative
campaigns to promote conserver solutions.

But first, I need statements of support from organizations (large and
small), businesses and municipalities. If you can help build the
conservation movement, please let me know what you can contribute so that I
can include you as a supporter or partner in the paper and in specific
funding proposals.

Please read over the 08 Collaborative Priorities paper and reply to this
e-mail with a specific statement of support, or answer any of the following
questions that relate to the specific proposals in the paper:

Engagement

1. A Provincial Campaign – movement based social marketing

Can your help spread the word and promote We Conserve with your existing
programs and activities (eg. membership and community outreach, existing
events etc.)?

2. Retail and Municipal Partners

Can you help engage stores and local governments as partners in We Conserve?
Is your municipality or business interested in becoming part of We Conserve?

3. Community Grants

Is your group interested in applying for a small grant to support targeted
outreach activities in support of We Conserve (eg circulating posters and
pledge cards in the community, or conducting a local event)?

Applied Capacity

1. Real Estate

Can you help engage real estate agents and/or provide initiatives and
services to help new homeowners adopt conservation solutions (such as energy
retrofits, naturalization, transportation alternatives etc.)?

2. Faith Communities

Can you help engage faith communities in conservation?

3. Residential Solar

Can you help promote residential solar panels or facilitate a
community-based approach to promoting and installing renewable power?

4. Conservation Action Networks

a) Is your municipality interested in setting up a conservation action
network to involve and support local groups as part of a local conservation
plan?

b) Can you coordinate a conservation action network within cultural or other
communities?

A United Conservation Appeal

1. Feasibility Study
Are you interested in participating in a feasibility study for a united
conservation appeal?

A note to funders and potential sponsors

This paper will be used as the basis for a) proposals to existing funds and
b) a sponsorship drive for We Conserve. Please contact me if you are
interested in sponsorship opportunities or seeing a targeted proposal on any
one of the above items.

A special thanks to everyone who has contributed thus far, and I look
forward to you comments, suggestions and statements of support!

Chris
