Local Action
A Couple of Updates
One of our priorities for 2008 is to strengthen capacity at the local level
by enlisting municipalities in We Conserve and helping set up local
conservation action networks. Here's a quick update on some of the
interesting local initiatives that we are connected with.
Oakville
Congratulations go to Suzanne Austin of the Town of Oakville. Suzanne, who
has been coordinating the Oakville Conserves initiative over the past two
years, has just been appointed the Town's Municipal Energy Conservation
Officer.
For details, see the press release from the

Community Conservation Initiative Grants March 14 deadline
The Ministry of Energy has renewed the Community Conservation Initiatives
(CCI) fund for 2008/2009 to support small local community grassroots
conservation initiatives. The 2007/2008 CCI program supported over thirty
projects in communities across Ontario totaling over $1.1 million.
The CCI program supports incorporated not-for-profit organizations that
deliver innovative energy conservation initiatives to their local community.
CCI is intended to help raise awareness about energy conservation, engage
energy consumers to undertake conservation actions, and foster long-term
behavioural change toward energy conservation. Priority is given to projects
that enhance the capacity of individuals or communities to conserve - and/or
promote small-scale ("behind the meter") renewable energy.
The application deadline for the 2008/2009 CCI program is March 14, 2008. In
general, the maximum CCI contribution available to individual projects is
$50,000. Projects can be up to ten months in length. All projects supported
by the CCI program must be completed by March 21, 2009.
For more information about applying to the CCI program please visit

Community Conservation Fairs
All across Ontario, there's a series of small community conservation fairs
happening thanks to a small grant program from the Ministry of Energy.
While you are on their website (see the above link) check out the list of
fairs to find one near you.
Toronto Conservation Action Network
We're setting up a Toronto Conservation Action Network - all the groups and
businesses in Toronto that can a) spread the word and b) offer services and
products to help people go green. We are partnering with Green Enterprise
Toronto (which is doing a marvelous job as an association of Toronto's green
businesses) and a number of local groups to host five community conservation
fairs (yes, thanks to the Ministry of Energy). See
www.weconserve.ca/toronto/ for details.
Jane's Walk 2008
Jane's Walk is expanding. The eclectic series of free neighbourhood walks
are hosted by community leaders to celebrate Jane Jacobs and to engage
people in observing and thinking about their community. Last year, it
launched in Toronto with over 2,000 people taking in 20 walks in one day.
This year - well, you'll just have to stay tuned to www.janeswalk.net
<http://www.janeswalk.net/> for the details on which towns and cities are
picking up the idea. It's gonna be great. And if you want to organize a
community, or a neighbourhood walk, send an e-mail to Jane Farrow
<mailto:info at janeswalk.net> , the director for Jane's Walk.
Keep up the great work everyone,
Chris
