Toronto gets organized - a bit.

This past month, I've been able to re-connect with my home town of Toronto,
thanks to a series of small grants from the Ministry of Energy. I've been
facilitating a series of five neighbourhood community conservation fairs - a
collaborative effort with local hosts for each fair, and with a newly-formed
network of businesses and organizations that offer conservation solutions.

The goal of the community fairs is to help connect people with the products
and services they need to become better conservers - including energy audits
and services, solar power, car-sharing, trees and gardening, even
responsible investing. We're also using it as an opportunity to lauch the
Toronto Conservation Action Network as a model for community organizing
around conservation solutions.

There is a wealth of resources available in most communities across Ontario,
including volunteers, community groups and small businesses. Unfortunately,
they are often overlooked as being an integral part of a climate change
strategy - too many and too small. On the contrary, these groups and
businesses represent the future. They are the new green economy and the
social infrastructure to support the transition to a low-impact conserver
society. They should be a key part of any municipal climate change or
environmental strategy.

As usual, we offer a low-cost elegant solution - create a 'conservation
action network'. Essentially, it's a contact list of every group and
business that can help engage people and/or provide solutions. Sounds
obvious, but in reality it doesn't exist in most municipalities. And from
there, you can find all sorts of interesting projects and campaigns that
everyone can benefit from.

If you are reading this in Toronto and before the end of March, please join
us at one of our community conservation fairs. See below for dates, or go to
