Walk with Jane!


The second annual Jane's Walk happens this weekend, and how this baby has
grown.

>From a germ of an idea at a meeting of the Ontario Smart Growth Network back
in March of 2007, it was quickly picked up by the friends of Jane Jacobs and
nurtured into a day-long series of walks led by community leaders. Over
2,000 people attended that first set of walks in May 2007.

Since then, a Jane's Walk took place in New York in the fall of 2007, and
this upcoming weekend there will be Jane's Walks in nine Canadian towns and
cities and in Salt Lake City. Truly spectacular.

In Ontario, there are Jane's Walks in Thornbury - Clarksburg (near Blue
Mountain), Guelph, Ottawa (14 walks), and Toronto (68 walks). It's a great
opportunity to explore neighbourhoods through fresh eyes, see what works
(and what doesn't) and dream up ideas for the future.

Myself, I'll be leading a tour around the condo developments at the Blue
Jay's Stadium and down to the waterfront. My co-leader, Mia Nielsen, lives
in one of the condos and our kids both attend the Waterfront Montessori on
the Toronto Island. Between us, we'll look at some of the fun things to do
in the area and toss out ideas on how to turn underused space into vibrant,
people-centred village squares and parks. Join us on Saturday, May 3rd at
4pm just west of the Stadium on Bremner Boulevard.
