A celebration of the life of Charles Caccia
(1930-2008)

We lost a long-time and great supporter of conservation and sustainable
development last month.

 

Charles Caccia was a great champion of the environment and other social
justice causes. He served as the Liberal member of Parliament for
Toronto-Davenport from 1968 to 2004, including terms as minister of the
environment and minister of labour.  He was the chair of Parliament's
environment and sustainable development committee until 2004, and continued
until his death to aggressively challenge policies that promoted nuclear
power, oil and gas industry subsidies, and deforestation.

An evening of celebration of this accomplished environmentalist, politician,
and citizen has been organized for:

On a personal note, I had many opportunities to work with Mr. Caccia over my
25 years in the conservation movement.  He always believed that Canada
could, and should, be a leader in sustainable economic development and in
tackling climate change.  I cannot help but think he suffered the same fate
that many of us did in the 1990's - relegated to the background during an
era of tax cuts and other self interests.  If only the federal government
had followed through on his leadership of the early 1980's, Canada's
environment and economy would be in a much better shape.
