Dear Friends,

 

Just over ten years ago, during the last economic crisis when thousands of
government and voluntary sector employees were laid off (including yours
truly), there was a sudden rise in good restaurants.  

 

So many of the newly unemployed turned to cooking as a creative way to make
a living.  My favourite, was Mitzi’s, a small café in a converted corner
store home in the middle of our residential neighbourhood. It soon became
the hub for new moms and Sunday brunchers alike, and a shining example of
smart growth within walkable community.

 

Odd, that we have Mike Harris to thank for a rise in community culture in
Toronto.

 

It makes you wonder what silver lining the current financial crisis may be
hiding
