Happy Anniversary Earth Day

April 22nd marked the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.  As an event, Earth Day
is marked spontaneously across Canada by community groups, schools and
businesses alike.  It is truly an example of a celebration that has become
as universal as Mother's Day and Valentines.  Bravo.

As an organization, Earth Day Canada <http://www.earthday.ca>  is
celebrating its twentieth anniversary.  It has become a leading organization
in helping organize schools and communities for positive change.  Earth Day
Canada is one of my favourite organizations -- largely because they are
great at collaborating and working together as part of a cooperative
movement. 

One other quick note -- I help judge the Toyota Earth Day Scholarship
program.  All the nominees are anonymous, so it was a pleasant surprise to
see that one of the Ontario scholarship winners was Anika
Roberts-Stahlbrand, the daughter of Lori Stahlbrand (one of our individual
members and the Executive Director of Local Food Plus), and Wayne Roberts
(project coordinator of the Toronto Food Policy Council).  Congratulations
to Anika and her proud parents!   You can see a video Anika produced on

Jane's Walk, May 1+2
Get out and walk!

The fourth annual Jane's Walk - the community walks that have gone
international!  The great thing about this year is that you can find Jane's
Walks in communities across Ontario, including Flesherton, Coboconk,
Kingston, Sault Ste Marie, Peterborough, Hamilton, Cambridge, Kitchener,
London, Guelph, and over 115 in Toronto!

WWF schools scholarship

WWF-Canada is proud to announce the Green CommUnity School Grants Program.
Through the generous support of Loblaw Companies Ltd, WWF-Canada will grant
$600,000 over the next three years, up to $200,000 a year, to Canadian
elementary and secondary schools. The grants will help reduce a community's
impact on the environment, increase understanding of environmental issues
and solutions, stimulate environmental leadership, and inspire students and
communities to take action. 

The deadline is May 3rd -- so get cracking!
