Action Update
What's New
Conservation Trends Report
Conservation is cool!
Turns out the public gets it, does it, and expects government leadership.
Read our report and <http://www.weconserve.ca/campaign/conservertrends.html>
polling data
Read Chris Winter's analysis <http://www.weconserve.ca/articles/?p=78> of
how the deep green vote is changing the face of politics.

You can help us build and support a strong green network in Toronto, simply
by registering and rating our project for Professional Green Advisors in the
Climate Spark challenge. We believe the next spark should support an entire
movement.

Ontario's New Cabinet
Here's some of the new ministers and the challenges they will face (Details
are here <http://www.premier.gov.on.ca/team/defaultaefd.html> ):
Dwight Duncan
<http://www.premier.gov.on.ca/team/biographyceee.html?MPPID=21> remains
Minister of Finance. He will face many challenges in this tough economy,
but will also be expected to find ways of stimulating new and green economic
growth.
Jim Bradley <http://www.premier.gov.on.ca/team/biographyf4e9.html?MPPID=31>
is the Minister of the Environment, returning to the portfolio after 21
years. He will be expected to find solutions for the major environmental
problems - and top of the list will be the Highland Companies proposal for a
quarry in Melancthon Township.
Chris Bentley <http://www.premier.gov.on.ca/team/biography3b34.html?MPPID=8>
is the new Minister of Energy. He will have the challenging task of solving
Ontario's power problems, including making conservation easier and
affordable for people, fine-tuning the Green Energy and Green Economy Act,
planning for new power, and upgrading the grid. All in all, the most
difficult post, from our viewpoint!
Michael Gravelle
<http://www.premier.gov.on.ca/team/biography8aeb.html?MPPID=55> Minister
of Natural Resources, will have to handle the Far North Act and engangered
species.
Ted McMeekin <http://www.premier.gov.on.ca/team/biographyab54.html?MPPID=67>
is the Minister Of Agriculture, Food And Rural Affairs. We will be looking
to him to continue the positive growth of local and sustainable food as a
provincial priority and a bridge between rural and urban communities.
Bob Chiarelli
<http://www.premier.gov.on.ca/team/biography4789.html?MPPID=93> will hold
two portfolios: Minister of Infrastructure and Minister of Transportation.
Talk about being on the hotseat, he will need to deal with increased
gridlock and development pressures, hopefully by reinforcing the work of the
Growth Secretariat in curbing sprawl. Also, with the Ontario Chief
Coroner's review
<http://news.ontario.ca/mcscs/en/2011/10/cycling-death-review-announcement--
-addendum.html> of cycling deaths, we can look for action to promote safe
cycling strategies across Ontario.
Charles Sousa
<http://www.premier.gov.on.ca/team/biographyb187.html?MPPID=85> is the new
Minister af Citizenship and Immigration. He will be in charge of the
Partnership Project, which is striving to develop a new relationship with
the voluntary sector in Ontario.
Kathleen Wynne
<http://www.premier.gov.on.ca/team/biographya332.html?MPPID=39> is now
responsible for working with municipalities as Minister of Municipal Affairs
and Housing. She will also serve as Minister of Aboriginal Affairs.
Municipalities are at the front lines of grappling with conservation issues,
and the Minister will need to find ways to empower communities and the
voluntary sector in creating stronger communities.
Overall, the challenge for the provincial government is to reflect the
growing public demand for integrated green solutions for our economy and in
our own lives. We look forward to working with the government on a
proactive agenda for Ontario.

Transport Futures -
Mobility Pricing Stakeholder Forum
November 22, 2011 @ Metropolitan Hotel, Toronto, Ontario
Supported by the Conservation Council of Ontario
Progressive governments use road tolls, parking fees, gas and carbon taxes
to reduce traffic congestion, fight climate change and generate revenue for
transportation infrastructure. Nevertheless, mentioning any one of these
mobility pricing measures in Canada often elicits strong reactions from
businesses, non-profits and the media, who, in turn, influence political and
public acceptance. What is the rationale for their views? Under what
implementation conditions would their opinions change? Join us at Transport
Futures to discover the answers and help create a meaningful public
consultation strategy with these leading stakeholders and international
experts:
* Kurt Van Dender, Chief Economist, International Transport Forum at
the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, Paris, France
* Jens Schade, Associate Professor, Dresden University of
Technology, Dresden, Germany
* David Hill, National Practice Leader - Parking Solutions, MMM
Group, Calgary, Alberta
* Teresa Di Felice, Director of Government and Community Relations,
Canadian Automobile Association - South Central Ontario, Thornhill, Ontario
* Royson James, Columnist, The Toronto Star, Toronto, Ontario
