Wind, Water and Sun Beat Biofuels, Nuclear and Coal for Energy
Generation, Study Says
The best ways to improve energy security, mitigate global warming and
reduce the number of deaths caused by air pollution are blowing in
the wind and rippling in the water, not growing on prairies or
glowing inside nuclear power plants.
Best to worst electric power sources:
1. Wind power 2. concentrated solar power (CSP) 3. geothermal
power 4. tidal power 5. solar photovoltaics (PV) 6. wave power 7.
hydroelectric power 8. a tie between nuclear power and coal with
carbon capture and sequestration (CCS).

An Upswing at a Down Time
December 17, 2008
Worldwatch Institute , Earth Policy Institute , OneWorld US,
BarackObama.com
The "explosive" growth in the United States of wind, solar, and
geothermal energy means increased energy security, stabilized energy
prices, and thousands of new jobs, writes environmental expert Lester
Brown, president of the Earth Policy Institute.
At a time when major U.S. companies are announcing job layoffs almost
daily, the renewable energy industry is hiring new workers every day
to build wind farms, install rooftop solar arrays, and build solar
thermal and geothermal power plants. The output of industrial firms
that manufacture the equipment for these energy facilities is
expanding by well over 30 percent a year. These investments both
create jobs and help prevent climate change from spiraling out of
control.

Greek protesters seek European support
December 17, Globe and Mail
ATHENS — Protesters hung two giant banners off the Acropolis
Wednesday, with slogans calling for mass demonstrations across Europe
and "resistance," after days of violent protests sparked by the fatal
police shooting of a teenager in Athens...
The riots that followed the teenager's death are the worst Greece has
seen in decades, feeding off widespread dissatisfaction with the
unpopular conservative government and anger over social inequality
and economic hardship...
On Tuesday, a group of youths stormed their way into Greece's state
television and radio studios, forcing broadcasters to put out anti-
government messages.
Ten young protesters disrupted a state NET television news broadcast
of the prime minister's speech, appearing live on national television
carrying banners that read: "Stop watching, get out onto the streets"
and "Free everyone who has been arrested."

Green giant urges energy rethink
Calls combo of wind, hydroelectric power `absolutely perfect'
Toronto Star, Dec. 18
Ontario could power itself exclusively on renewable energy one day if
it thought
differently about the operation and design of its entire electricity
system,
says the chief architect of Germany's green-energy law.
German legislator Hermann Scheer, largely credited for pushing
through the
policies that have turned his country into a renewable-energy
powerhouse, said
the biggest challenge is overcoming the belief that large,
centralized power
plants based on nuclear fission and fossil fuels are necessary for an
electricity system to operate reliably.

Toronto stood up to bottled water industry
Dec 11, 2008
TONY CLARKE - Polaris Institute
Toronto's decision last week to ban the sale and distribution of
bottled water on city premises was a watershed moment for water
justice advocates the world over. What was truly significant about
Toronto's action was not that it banned an environmentally
destructive product, but that it included a commitment to ensuring
access to tap water in all city facilities...
It's becoming clear that the recent love affair with bottled water
has reached its limits. Bottled water's 15 minutes are up, the
marketing scam is out of the closet and the tap is back. The simple
fact is that there is no "green" solution to bottled water. While it
might serve a function during natural disasters or other
contingencies, it is no alternative to the tap.

Former Vice President Al Gore's crusade to halt global warming's

misconceptions that surround it.
Read more and watch an excerpt online.
With wit, smarts and hope, An Inconvenient Truth ultimately brings

global warming as a political issue - rather, it is the biggest moral
challenges facing our global civilization.
