"What is needed is a realization that power without love is reckless
and abusive and that love without power is sentimental and anemic.
Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice." -

FOREVER PLASTIC
Premiering On: Thursday January 15, 2009 at 9 pm on CBC TV
Repeating on: Saturday January 17, 2009 at 10 pm on CBC Newsworld
Durable, high-tech, sexy and see through…we just can't seem to resist
its glossy appeal. It seems so modern, it's hard to believe it's been
around for 100 years. The early days of plastics were explosive: the
first synthetic billiard balls blew up on impact! Over the years
plastics have quietly permeated all parts of our lives. But what do
we do with something that doesn't go away when we throw it way? Our
oceans and dumps are filling up with the stuff, and yet inventive
ideas for single use plastics just keep rolling out.
Forever Plastic focuses on our struggle to live more responsibly with
plastic. At the heart of the documentary is a "plastics recycling
challenge" which shows how hard it is to know what plastics really
are being recycled. And those seemingly green containers that are so
tempting? A closer look reveals that environmentally friendly
plastics aren't always what they seem to be.
A new documentary from CBC TV's in-house documentary production unit.

Tennessee Sludge Spill Estimate Grows to One Billion Gallons
Estimates for the amount of thick sludge that gushed from a
Tennessee coal plant last week have tripled to more than a billion
gallons, as cleanup crews try to remove the goop from homes and
railroads and halt its oozing into an adjacent river.
At least 300 acres of land has been coated by the sludge, a bigger
area than the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill.

Pathologizing your Period
Despite a lack of evidence, the psychiatric establishment has made
extreme premenstrual distress a recognized disorder—and a boon to Big
Pharma.
By Paula J. Caplan, published in Ms. Magazine
Are you unhappy? Bloated? Is it hard to concentrate? Do you have food
cravings? Breast tenderness?
If you read the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM), published by the American Psychiatric Association, you will
find your symptoms listed under “premenstrual dysphoric
disorder” (PMDD). In other words, because of those symptoms, a
therapist or doctor could label you as having a mental disorder.

Feed-In Frenzy
A simple green tariff has transformed Germany. Why isn’t Canada
following suit
Published in The Walrus, by Chris Turner
... The engine of this radical transformation is the single most
effective climate policy measure yet devised: a straightforward law
called a feed-in tariff that obliges power distributors to purchase
electricity from renewable sources for a fixed time, at fixed rates
above market prices. The German FIT (the Renewable Energy Sources
Act, by name) sets the price for green power far higher than market
rates — as much as seven times higher in the case of solar energy.
Although Germany is not particularly windy and is kissed each year by
about the same amount of sunlight as southern Alaska, it is now a
global leader in the generation of energy from sun and wind, and in
the production of solar panels and wind turbines. Its renewable
energy industry employs about a quarter of a million people, and
brought in almost $40 billion in revenue in 2007, up 10 percent from
2006 and nearly four times the figure for 2000.

Mood-boosting drugs make unhappy fish
Drugs called antidepressants find their way into lakes and streams,
affecting the behavior of fish living there in unexpected ways
The researchers found that antidepressants affect fish species in
numerous ways, from diminishing their response to predators to
slowing down their prey-hunting techniques. One unexpected result
even showed that a type of antidepressant called fluoxetine (Prozac)
acts like estrogen, a primarily female hormone, when in the bodies of
adult male fathead minnows.

Alzheimer's drugs nearly double death risk in elderly: study
January 8, 2009
Anti-psychotic drugs commonly used to treat Alzheimer's disease may
double a patient's chance of dying within a few years, suggests a new
study that adds to concerns already known about such medications.
"For the vast majority of Alzheimer's patients, taking these drugs is
probably not a worthwhile risk," said Clive Ballard of the Wolfson
Centre for Age-Related Diseases at King's College London, the paper's
lead author.
