What we do know for certain is that social justice does not come from
passivity or non-caring. Justice must be struggled for. That is what
life is, or should be all about -- striving for justice.

Vancouver's Olympics head for disaster
Two weeks before the games and with police officers on every corner,
Vancouver is far from an Olympic wonderland
"The Bailout Games" have already been labelled a staggering financial
disaster. While the complete costs are still unknown, the Vancouver
and British Columbian governments have hinted at what's to come by
cancelling 2400 surgeries, laying off 233 government employees, 800
teachers and recommending the closure of 14 schools.

PETA claims responsibility after Fisheries Minister pied in face
New Yorker charged with assault after woman hits Gail Shea squarely in
face with 'tofu cream pie' during Ontario speech
The animal-rights group PETA says it is responsible for the incident.
PETA says in a release it was part of its campaign “to stop the
government's ill-advised sanction of the slaughter of seals,” and
called the pie used a “tofu cream pie.”

Pie hit should earn PETA 'terrorist' label: MP
"Mr. Byrne's reaction is a silly, chest-beating exercise that is
unlikely to impress anyone who has a heart for animals or who is
bright enough to spot the difference between a bomb and a tofu cream
pie," Newkirk said in a statement.

Common antidepressant drugs linked to lactation difficulties in moms
According to a new study accepted for publication in The Endocrine
Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM), women
taking commonly used forms of antidepressant drugs may experience
delayed lactation after giving birth and may need additional support
to achieve their breastfeeding goals.
"The breasts are serotonin-regulated glands, meaning the breasts'
ability to secrete milk at the right time is closely related to the
body's production and regulation of the hormone serotonin," said
Nelson Horseman, PhD, of the University of Cincinnati and co-author of
the study. "Common antidepressant drugs like fluoxetine, sertraline
and paroxetine are known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor
(SSRI) drugs and while they can affect mood, emotion and sleep they
may also impact serotonin regulation in the breast, placing new
mothers at greater risk of a delay in the establishment of a full milk
supply."

Under Scrutiny, WHO, Pharma Seek To Explain “Dangerous Nonsense” Of
Pandemic
Representatives of the World Health Organization and the European
pharmaceutical industry today answered charges from the Council of
Europe and the press on whether they had mishandled an outbreak of
influenza last summer.
The H1N1 virus (so-called swine flu) is not a genuine threat to public
health, and this was widely known as early as April 2009, contended
Wodarg, raising the concern that a pandemic was declared in June
primarily to push massive government procurement of patented vaccines.
These vaccines that were then rushed to market with inadequate testing
might themselves pose a threat to public health, he said.

When Corporations Rule The World (Thanks to the Supreme Court)
With its ruling in Citizens United v. the Federal Election Commission
(FEC), the Supreme Court has granted corporations even further
unfettered
access to destroy the fundamental Constitutional protections against
corporate control of government. The Chamber of Commerce and ExxonMobil
must be thrilled.

Scientists from 28 countries condemn Quebec's asbestos export
Support independent science, not industry misinformation, scientists
tell Charest
Over a hundred prominent scientists in 28 countries have challenged
Premier Jean Charest, who leaves on a trade mission to India on Jan.
31, to stop Quebec's export of asbestos to the developing world.
In their letter, released today, the scientists note that Quebec uses
virtually none of the asbestos it mines; is spending millions of
dollars to remove all forms of asbestos from its schools and
buildings; and that its own health experts oppose the government's
asbestos policy and have shown that in Quebec itself, it has been
impossible to use any asbestos safely.
This indicates a disturbing double standard that brings dishonour on
Quebec's international reputation, the scientists tell Charest.
