Copenhagen - the Munich of our times?

The Copenhagen Climate Accord was a failure of historic proportions
that is hardly worth the paper it is printed on. The climate
negotiations need to adopt a new
approach that can overcome barriers like national self-interest.

Stop the Cruel Grey Seal Slaughter
Sign the Petition

Tragically, the government of Nova Scotia allows the commercial
slaughter of grey seals in the protected Scaterie Island Wilderness
Area. The grey seal kill on Hay Island, part of this protected area,
is one of the cruelest seal slaughters HSI has ever documented.

Suppliers of oil sands fuel shunned

Two big US companies have decided to avoid suppliers that source fuel
from Canada’s oil sands to curb their carbon footprints.

The decisions by Whole Foods Market, an organic grocery chain, and Bed
Bath & Beyond, a household goods company, underline how industry is
moving to fill the void left by inaction at Copenhagen and the failure
of the US Congress to limit carbon emissions.

The Corporate Takeover of U.S. Democracy

By Noam Chomsky

Jan. 21, 2010, will go down as a dark day in the history of U.S.
democracy, and its decline. On that day the U.S. Supreme Court ruled
that the government may not ban corporations from political spending
on elections--a decision that profoundly affects government policy,
both domestic and international.
The decision heralds even further corporate takeover of the U.S.
political system.

McQuaig: Tory chill freezes out Tobin tax
Long resisted by Wall Street, the Tobin tax – or its new broader
version, the financial transaction tax, sometimes called the Robin
Hood tax – is now winning approval in the corridors of power. Since
last fall, the governments of Britain, France and Germany have all
indicated support.

But the Harper government opposes the tax.

Tasered
CBC documentary
Thursday February 18, 2010 at 9 pm on CBC-TV
Repeating: Friday February 19 at 10 pm ET/PT & Sunday February 21 at
10 pm on CBC News Network

A decade later, more than 400 people have died in North America
‘proximal to Taser use.’ That is raising doubts about those early
claims. Human Rights groups clamor for more independent research into
the weapon and national standards for its use. Newspaper editorials
demand the kind of testing that they say was not done those ten years
ago
