No need for speed
At 50 km/h, according to the U.S. department of transportation, cars
will kill almost half of pedestrians struck. At 30 km/h or less, 19 in
20 will survive. A recent study in the journal Medical Decision Making
(MDM) found that lowering speed by an average of 3 km/h would reduce
U.S. deaths by 9,000 annually.

Robinhood Tax

A tiny tax on bankers that would give billions to tackle poverty and
climate change, here and abroad. This tax on banks – not you or I -
has the power to raise hundreds of billions every year. It could give
a vital boost to the NHS, our schools, and the fight against child
poverty in the UK – as well as tackling poverty and climate change
around the world. Not complicated. Just brilliant.

State lawmakers take aim at free parking

There is too much of it, they say, and it encourages people to drive
instead of taking the bus, walking or bicycling. A Senate proposal
would prompt cities and businesses to reduce its availability.

Postcard campaign to generate support for Bill C-440!

The Campaign in support of U.S. Iraq war resisters in Canada is once
again ramping up in the face of ongoing threats of deportation by the
minority Conservative government. Bill C-440 – that would let war
resisters apply for permanent residence – has survived prorogation and
will be up for second reading and a vote after Parliament returns on
March 3, 2010. In order to show that the majority of Canadians still
oppose the war in Iraq, and support those soldiers who have said no,
we have launched a brand new postcard campaign. This time, the
campaign will be collecting all postcards centrally, in order to
deliver a big message to the Prime Minister in Ottawa.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT! Can we send you a stack of postcards to get
signed by your local network and contacts? If you would like a stack
of postcards to get signed, please email wrsctoronto at gmail.com. Let us
know where to send them and how many you can use.

DEADLINE for current postcard drive: March 31, 2010

Organized by the War Resisters Support Campaign: http://www.facebook.com/l/4e779;www.resisters.ca/

Launching climateresponse.ca

Climate change is happening and human activity is the cause, according
to the majority of global climatologists.

And yet, comment sections on online media are riddled with claims by
deniers that climate change is a hoax, and the credibility of an
entire body of climate research is now under scrutiny. There is
evidence that the denier movement is funded in part by the fossil fuel
industry and in some cases driven by public relations firms.

It’s time to take back the climate conversation.

A group of citizens is launching climateresponse.ca, an online
gathering and resource place for Canadians seeking to elevate the
conversation on climate change and its solutions in the media. Members
are encouraged to contribute frequently to the media, whether through
Letters to the Editor, online comments sections or call-in talk shows.

Climate Response serves its members twofold:

· Provides resources and 'fast facts & stats' on climate
change and the low carbon economy. Each fast fact is from websites,
reports or journals of peer-reviewed scientists and economists, as
well as government, agency and corporate reports. Facts & stats are
categorized to assist members when writing to the media or government
representatives.
· Provides a community for those who want to be a positive
force in transitioning to a low-carbon and sustainable economy.

Be part of a level-headed approach to this critical problem. Armed
with expert-backed facts, help elevate the public discourse on climate
change and the transition to the low-carbon and sustainable economy.

Half of world's primate species endangered, report says

The main threat facing primates -- including apes, monkeys, and lemurs
-- is tropical forest destruction, with the illegal wildlife trade and
commercial bush meat hunting also playing roles. Scientists say
primates are humankind's closest animal relatives.

Canada's permafrost retreats amid warming trend

When permafrost melts, it can liberate the powerful greenhouse gas
methane that is locked in the frozen soil… The southern edge of
permafrost in the James Bay area has moved about 80 miles north of
where it was 50 years ago… This increase was the biggest percentage
rise for any region of the world's wetlands, the Science study found.
Methane has about 21 times the global warming potential of carbon
dioxide, according to the International Emissions Trading Association.

When the Body Says No: Understanding the Stress-Disease Connection
with Dr. Gabor Maté

Approx. 20 min.

The Vancouver-based Dr. Gabor Maté argues that too many doctors seem
to have forgotten what was once a commonplace assumption–that emotions
are deeply implicated in both the development of illness and in the
restoration of health. Based on medical studies and his own experience
with chronically ill patients at the Palliative Care Unit at Vancouver
Hospital, where he was the Medical Coordinator for seven years, Dr.
Gabor Mate makes the case that there are important links between the
mind and the immune system. He found that stress and individual
emotional makeup play critical roles in an array of diseases.

"Raise My Taxes, Please! Evaluating Household Savings From High
Quality Public Transit" ( http://www.vtpi.org/raisetaxes.pdf )

High quality public transit consists of service sufficiently
convenient and comfortable to attract travel that would otherwise be
by automobile. This paper uses data from U.S. cities to investigate
the incremental costs and benefits of high quality transit service.
The analysis indicates that high quality public transit typically
requires about $268 annually per capita in additional tax subsidy and
$104 in additional fares, but provides vehicle, parking and road cost
savings averaging $1,040 per capita, plus other benefits including
congestion reductions, increased traffic safety, pollution reductions,
improved mobility for non-drivers, improved fitness and health. This
indicates that residents should rationally support tax increases if
needed to create high quality public transit systems in their
communities. Current planning practices tend to overlook or undervalue
many of these savings and benefits and so result in underinvestment in
transit quality improvements.

Health Promotion Party of Canada
- established to pressure conservatives to invest more into preventing
illnesses

With rapidly rising prescription drug costs causing out-of-control
health care spending, the Health Promotion Party of Canada has been
established to pressure the Conservatives to invest more money
(without raising taxes) into preventing illnesses so echo baby boomers
– born between 1982 and 1995 – are not the first generation of adults
forced to pay off what is projected to be an enormous national debt
caused largely by caring for the health of unhealthy aging baby boomers.

Even if you’re a member of another federal political party, I
encourage you to join the Health Promotion Party of Canada (HPPC) at
no cost until March 31, 2010 to help improve the health of Canadians.
I did! The membership list will be kept strictly confidential.
