No Nukes News
April 12, 2011
Birds fly by the reactors constantly. They have not obeyed the evacuation
orders one bit. How far do they get after they fly directly in the plume, or
drink the water from the ponds and puddles? Or feast on the radioactive
corpses that litter the area? Do the birds then fall into the sea, to be
eaten by fish which we then will consume, still hot with radioactivity? -
Russell D. Hoffman <http://www.counterpunch.org/hoffman04062011.html>
The nuclear industry must be exasperated to know that Germany has installed
over 30,000 megawatts of wind power in less than 10 years, while pursuing a
nuclear phase-out program; and that Germany has now shut down eight of its
sixteen nuclear reactors in the wake of the Fukushima disaster, and has
announced plans to accelerate its nuclear phase-out program. No doubt
nuclear proponents are equally exasperated to know that Germany has more
megawatts of solar photovoltaics installed already than the entire 6-reactor
Fukushima complex, and that the electricity-producing wind farms in Japan --
including those off-shore -- survived the earthquakes and tsunamis intact,
and are now producing electricity for those who are struggling to bring the
crippled reactors under control. - Gordon Edwards <http://www.ccnr.org/> .

Radiation risks from Fukushima 'no longer negligible'
The risks associated with iodine-131 contamination in Europe are no longer
"negligible," according to CRIIRAD, a French research body on radioactivity.
The NGO is advising pregnant women and infants against "risky behaviour,"
such as consuming fresh milk or vegetables with large leaves.

Association of German utility companies calls for abolishing nuclear power
by 2020
Germany's utility companies want "swift and complete" abolishment of nuclear
power in the wake of the disaster at Japan's Fukushima reactors, says their
umbrella organization. Up until today the organization had been fully behind
nuclear energy, but the events in Japan caused the dramatic U-turn. The
association represents about 1,800 utilities, among them the operators of
the country's 17 nuclear reactors. Germany currently gets almost a quarter
of its electricity from nuclear power.

Nuclear Questions for the Leaders' Debates and Candidates Running for
Election
The province of Ontario has asked the federal government to subsidize the
cost of 2 new Candu nuclear reactors to be built at the existing Darlington
site on the shore of Lake Ontario. Do you believe that Canadian taxpayers
should subsidize the construction of new nuclear reactors in Ontario? And do
you agree that there should be a moratorium on nuclear refurbishment and
expansion until we can properly assess the potential for safer and cheaper
alternatives?

Plan B: Mobilizing to Save Civilization
Fantastic 84 minute film with global enviro leader Lester Brown.
"Plan B" provides a glimpse into a new and emerging economy based upon
renewable resources as well as strategies to avoid the growing threat of
climate change. As prices rise, oil insecurity deepens, and concerns about
carbon emissions cast a shadow over the future of fossil fuels, wind, solar,
and geothermal energy are replacing fossil fuels at a pace and on a scale
previously unimagined.
