* Ward 17 Councillor Cesar Palacio has put forward a Notice of Motion that will be considered at Toronto City Council at the Nov. 27/28th Council meeting. Read the motion <http://cleanairalliance.us5.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=9e0d2b5aacdacc8f6d679bba2&id=4e2a6d5f49&e=01a7182789> here. Palacio’s motion is asking support from Council to, among other things, persuade GE-Hitachi to move out of our community within 5 years. While we’d like them to leave sooner than that, we hope that Council will support his motion.
* This is a CALL TO ACTION! If you live anywhere in Toronto, please call or email your City Councillor on the 27th or 28th and encourage him/her to support Palacio’s motion. All the Councillors need to hear from their constituents that this issue is important! You can find your Councillor’s contact info <http://cleanairalliance.us5.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=9e0d2b5aacdacc8f6d679bba2&id=7de53f72ac&e=01a7182789> here.
* Also, Palacio’s motion is expected to be heard on Wed. Nov. 28th at 2 p.m., Toronto City Hall, Council Chambers (Queen and Bay). If you’re able, please join us on Wed. Nov. 28th, 1:30 p.m. at Nathan Philips Square for a rally before heading into the Council Chamber at 2 p.m. to witness the Council debate. Please come!
"Families living in Toronto shouldn't have to be exposed to the risk of a radioactive heavy metal in their air, water or soil. It's time for the GE-Hitachi uranium processing plant to be relocated to some nuclear exclusion zone like those around the Bruce or Darlington nuclear reactors. The existing site in Toronto should be vacated and decontaminated." Dr. Gordon Edwards

Dormant nuclear facilities could potentially pose a tantalizing prize for terrorists or smugglers of nuclear materials, and experts point to another worry: Only a handful of reactors worldwide have been fully dismantled, meaning the process is largely uncharted territory. Tearing apart reactor cores, for instance, creates unknown challenges and potential risks given the level of radiation inside them.

Like Quebec, we should divert those billions into renewable, healthier energy sources… But health risks of the nuclear industry slip under the radar of governments, policy-makers, and the public. As physicians, it is our duty to advocate for illness prevention and we see nuclear power as a serious threat to public health.

☼ “This year’s World Energy Outlook shows that by 2035, we can achieve energy savings equivalent to nearly a fifth of global demand in 2010. In other words, energy efficiency is just as important as unconstrained energy supply, and increased action on efficiency can serve as a unifying energy policy that brings multiple benefits.” <http://cleanairalliance.us5.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=9e0d2b5aacdacc8f6d679bba2&id=63a304d224&e=01a7182789> IEA Executive Director Maria van der Hoeven.

The majority of replacement is from the so-called “negawatt,” or energy efficiency, during peak periods in large cities like Tokyo or Osaka.
