They write: UNSCEAR could have presented a more realistic picture of what effects people can expect from the radioactive fallout in the coming decades, including thyroid cancer, leukemia, solid tumors, non-cancer diseases and genetic defects, all of which have been found in the population affected by the Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe.

☢ <http://cleanairalliance.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9e0d2b5aacdacc8f6d679bba2&id=ac1322a89d&e=45743fde61> Nuclear accident won’t increase most cancers, says the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission Gordon Edwards responds: “When they say that there are no attributable health effects, they’re not saying there won’t be health effects; they’re just saying you can’t prove that we did it.” He also noted that the report doesn’t discuss the economic impact of a severe accident, with mass evacuation, contaminated property and economic disruption. Shawn-Patrick Stensil of Greenpeace questioned whether the report accurately portrays the risk of a major accident. He said it assumes that the amount of radiation released is “significantly lower” than the release at Chernobyl or Fukushima.

☢ <http://cleanairalliance.us5.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=9e0d2b5aacdacc8f6d679bba2&id=945db3b3bf&e=45743fde61> Comments on Bill C-22 by Gordon Edwards Bill C-22 is in third reading. If passed in its present form, Bill C-22 would cancel the existing Nuclear Liability Act (limiting the offsite liability of nuclear facility operators to $75 million) and replace it with the current version of the Nuclear Liability and Compensation Act (limiting the offsite liability of nuclear facility operators to $1 billion). We urge you, as elected representatives of the Canadian population, not to approve this Act for third reading without insisting on due diligence.

Ontario

☢ Hydro imports: When will the bulb go on for Ontario and Quebec <http://cleanairalliance.us5.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=9e0d2b5aacdacc8f6d679bba2&id=3f90313a35&e=45743fde61> ? Watching and listening to Ontario politicians during this campaign, and for many years now, the curious taxpayer wonders why a very obvious and potentially very promising source for clean, inexpensive energy has failed to generate much interest: a big increase of hydro imports from neighbouring Quebec.

☢ A great summary on where the 4 major ON parties stand on energy <http://cleanairalliance.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9e0d2b5aacdacc8f6d679bba2&id=b3ce08b9da&e=45743fde61>

☢ Right idea, wrong target <http://cleanairalliance.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9e0d2b5aacdacc8f6d679bba2&id=21851c0226&e=45743fde61> Mr. Hudak has embraced the right solution - water power from Quebec - but the wrong target. Nuclear energy is far more responsible for driving up our electricity bills than renewable energy.

☢ Why is no one talking nuclear on the election trail <http://cleanairalliance.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9e0d2b5aacdacc8f6d679bba2&id=44806e05c3&e=45743fde61> Despite tens of billions of dollars of nuclear projects in the pipeline, nuclear policy is a no-go area in the Ontario election.

☢ Don’t look for green policies in this Ontario election <http://cleanairalliance.us5.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=9e0d2b5aacdacc8f6d679bba2&id=79f95bfee1&e=45743fde61> There’s an almost across-the board silence in Ontario's election campaign on basic environmental issues like air and water quality. As for electricity, the Greens offer the clearest direction, indicating that they would abandon the Liberals’ nuclear refurbishment plans in favour of conservation and electricity imports from Quebec. The PCs are unequivocal in their rejection of renewable energy and embrace of nuclear energy, hydro imports and “cheap and abundant natural gas.” Even more remarkable is the NDP platform’s silence on the nuclear question. The enormously economically and environmentally risky refurbishments of the Darlington and Bruce nuclear facilities remain the centrepiece of the Liberals’ electricity strategy.

☢ Anti-nuclear advocates, Federal Court trouble, Ontario Liberal and PCs energy plans <http://cleanairalliance.us5.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=9e0d2b5aacdacc8f6d679bba2&id=05d28fedce&e=45743fde61> A great update/overview. "The Liberal government has given the ok to rebuild reactors at the Darlington and Bruce nuclear stations without a cost estimate or a public review. The gas plant scandal has gotten lots of attention since the last election, but it'll end up being small change compared to the nuclear fiascos coming our way" according to Shawn-Patrick Stensil of Greenpeace.

☢ Canada's nuclear regulator will allow reactors at the Pickering nuclear station to operate past their design limit <http://cleanairalliance.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9e0d2b5aacdacc8f6d679bba2&id=c7ee4f2762&e=45743fde61> Environmental groups that had appeared before the commission had argued that the limit shouldn’t be exceeded because OPG’s emergency plans for a serious nuclear accident and a wide-spread release of radiation are inadequate. Furthermore, the province doesn’t need the output of the reactors.
