☢ New Poll Finds Canadians Do Not Trust Nuclear Energy and Reactors In a national poll of over 2000 Canadians, the vast majority have strong concerns about nuclear power and small modular reactors and believe it is the wrong path to deal with climate change.

☢ Former SNC-Lavalin executive sentenced to 8½ years in prison for fraud and corruption The Montreal engineering giant also settled criminal charges and agreed to a $280-million fine and a three-year probation order. SNC-Lavalin is the same company that is handling much of Canada's nuclear waste and rebuilding reactors at Darlington.

☢ Is This The Death Knell For Nuclear? Money spent on building and running nuclear power stations is diverting cash away from competitors that are cheaper, faster and lower carbon. Stabilizing the climate is urgent, nuclear power is slow.

☢ Forgetting Fukushima Now, with the 2020 Summer Olympics approaching, and some events scheduled to be held in Fukushima prefecture, all sorts of tactics are being used to bury social and environmental problems associated with the nuclear disaster.

☢ Fukushima’s Hot Particles in Japan: Their Meaning for the Olympics and Beyond Hundreds of thousands of people—athletes, officials, media, and spectators—will flood into Japan for the 2020 Olympics. But radiation exposure dangers from Fukushima have not ended since the explosions spread radioactive contamination over large areas reaching Tokyo and beyond.

☢ U.S. Lawmakers oppose Ontario’s Lake Huron high-level nuclear waste storage “The government of Canada should look for a new location that is far away from the Great Lakes for storing its nuclear waste.”

☢ Evacuations after Severe Nuclear Accidents This article discusses the experience of evacuations during the Fukushima nuclear disaster; whether lengthy evacuations from large cities are feasible; and some emergency plans for evacuations in NA and Canada.

☢ Pickering Nuclear emergency – Next time it could be real On Jan. 12, the Ontario Emergency Measures Office issued and then withdrew an emergency alert for the Pickering Nuclear Station. This alert was a reminder that the Pickering Nuclear Station has a long history of serious accidents.

☢ NB Power signs three deals to bring more Quebec electricity into the province and Transmission line to deliver hydropower from Canada to US gets key approval - What is Ontario waiting for? We already have the transmission lines, and QC is offering us their low-cost renewable water power at half the cost of Pickering, and one third the cost of rebuilding Darlington and Bruce nuclear stations.

☢ Ontario should denuclearize its power generation A catastrophe such as Chernobyl or Fukushima happening at Pickering may be difficult to comprehend, but the consequences would be so severe we need to rethink our reliance on nuclear power in Ontario.

☢ Elephant in the Room 11 min. video about the Pickering Nuclear station by filmmaker Kyoko Yokoma

☢ Critics say Doug Ford's goal of keeping an aging nuclear plant online is 'playing with fire' “As it gets older, the metal is getting progressively more brittle, meaning it is more inclined to break, more inclined to crack, more inclined to split, and that is very dangerous,” Dr. Gordon Edwards said.
