GLOBAL

How a green new deal really could go global

World leaders know their countries face one of the most severe recessions in history thanks to the coronavirus restrictions. This week the European Union put its cards on the table, unveiling what it is billing as the biggest "green" stimulus package in history committing tens of billions of euros to make homes more energy efficient, to decarbonise electricity and phase out petrol and diesel vehicles.

Let’s Pay Attention to What COVID-19 Is Trying to Tell Us About Climate Change

We can spend more on green infrastructure and less on military machinery. We can have the moral courage to allow the price of things we buy to reflect the true cost to the environment, our health, and to the well-being of the people making those things; while at the same time, making sure that all of us have access to our basic needs for food, shelter, medical care and meaningful work... These months with COVID-19 have taught us we are capable of making healthier choices when our lives depend upon it.

Justice for George Floyd

George Floyd was a peace activist and respected community leader. He was far from his home in Houston when he was murdered in broad daylight by Minneapolis police. Petition.

Far-Right Extremists Are Hoping to Turn the George Floyd Protests into a New Civil War

Armed extremists are showing up to protests and urging a “boogaloo” — code for civil war — online.

CANADA

Canada Leads G20 in Per Capita Public Financing to Oil and Gas

Canada has lavished at least C$13.8 billion per year in public financing on oil and gas projects since signing on to the Paris climate agreement, making it the fossil industry’s highest per capita source of public finance in the G20, and their second-largest overall benefactor after China, according to a blistering new report issued by Oil Change International and Friends of the Earth U.S.

ONTARIO

Pandemic leads to moratorium on Ontario’s nuclear re-build programs

Both Bruce Power and OPG have paused their nuclear rebuild programs. It's time to reconsider whether it makes sense to continue with the previous Government’s high-cost plan to re-build 10 aging nuclear reactors and to continue to subsidize our electricity rates to the tune of $5.6 billion per year. Please email Premier Ford here and tell him you support getting Ontario back to work by launching an energy retrofit program for our homes and businesses that will also lower our electricity bills.

Bruce Power ordered to reveal nuclear prices

The Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner has ruled that Bruce Power and the Ontario Government must come clean on the cost of power from rebuilt reactors.

TORONTO

Toronto City Council approves 40 km of new bike lanes - including 15 km of TaketheTooker!

Council took a huge step forward by approving a plan to add 40 km of new (temporary) bike lanes (covid-kms). Included are 15 continuous km along Bloor-Danforth, from Runnymede to Dawes. TaketheTooker gains ground!

https://bellsonbloor.wordpress.com/2020/05/28/toronto-city-council-approves-40-km-of-new-bike-lanes/

p.s. TaketheTooker was a campaign begun in 2005 in Tooker’s honor. The vision was for an east-west bicycle expressway along the Bloor/Danforth corridor, from Mississauga to Scarborough. Slowly it is emerging. http://takethetooker.ca/_page_id=2.html

Judy Versus Capitalism

Film available to screen online until June 6

Since the 1970s, Judy Rebick has been a vocal advocate for a more progressive Canada. A second-wave feminist, writer, journalist and radical activist, Rebick worked closely with Dr. Henry Morgentaler and the pro-choice movement and led the largest women’s organization in Canada through the 1990s. Decades of advocacy and living in the public eye coincided with her personal challenges with mental health, stemming from childhood trauma. She shows that the personal is most definitely political.
