Formula to Prevent Pandemics: Less Meat, Less Wildland Encroachment
Humans must eat less meat and processed foods, create less food waste, and limit population growth if we are to stop the degradation of tropical rainforests—degradation that science is connecting ever more closely to the rise of infectious diseases like COVID-19.

Unheeded Warnings – COVID-19 & Migrant Workers in Canada
This shocking report provides a snapshot of the abuses faced by migrant farmworkers, including stolen wages during quarantine, being forced to work while awaiting COVID-19 test results, racist threats, decrepit housing and inhumane treatment. The report situates these abuses in a long history of prior warnings made by migrant workers about Canada’s temporary immigration and labour laws.

Alberta's Bill 1 Is 'Racially Targeted': First Nations Leaders
The bill bans demonstrations at “critical infrastructure” areas, described as pipelines, oilsands sites, mining sites as well as utilities, streets, highways, railways, and telecom towers and equipment. “Bill 1 seems like it’s out of the same playbook as [U.S. President Donald] Trump. It’s fascist, anti-democratic, anti-civil rights and completely annihilates the rights of Indigenous communities”

TORONTO
Defund the Toronto Police
Councillors Kristyn Wong-Tam and Josh Matlow released a motion to wrest control of the Toronto Police budget, defund it by 10%, and re-balance our public funds towards investing in much-needed community supports. A Toronto Police budget reduction of 10% represents a $122 million cut in the upcoming 2021 budget. We are proposing to re-invest those funds into community-led alternatives to policing and the criminal justice system, anti-racism education, the Toronto Youth Equity Strategy, affordable housing, Tenant Defend Funds, skills training and employment counselling, childcare, food security and more in consultation with the Confronting Anti-Black Racism Unit Partnership and Accountability Circle and Social Development Finance Administration staff. If you want even more systemic changes, then please organize, call your neighbour, tell your friends to contact the Premier, MPPs, Mayor and Councillors. Let them know that you want them to support this motion and act on it immediately.

Making Sure Canada Never Misses Another Climate Target
Wed. June 17, 1 p.m. EST
A Climate Action Network Canada webinar on Canadian climate accountability. As a nation, we have missed every greenhouse gas reduction target set by the Canadian government prior to the current 2030 target, and are currently not on track to meet the 2030 target. While governments can claim credit for setting long-term goals, several short-term, and sometimes hard, necessary steps remain to achieve them. That’s why countries around the world are establishing the same types of accountability measures used in financial planning – budgets, independent audits, long- and short term plans, etc. – to address climate change. In the last election, most major political parties pledged to implement some of these measures. In this webinar, we will present recommendations for Canadian climate accountability legislation and mechanisms. Canadians want action on climate change. We know it’s absolutely possible to reach Canada’s current goal of reducing GHG emissions by 30% below 2005 levels by 2030. We also know the 2030 target does not represent our fair share of addressing global climate change and that Canada needs to do more. Join us as we walk you through the five pillars of a Canadian Climate Accountability Act.

Quarrels with Quarries
Wed. June 17, 6:30 p.m. EST
Aggregate mining--for gravel, sand and rocks--is big business in Ontario. The pits and quarries that go into getting these building blocks of construction also pose significant threats to wetlands, farmland, wildlife habitat and drinking water. The current Ontario Government has made moves to reduce restrictions on where and how gravel pits and quarries are permitted, and it's important that we all have the tools to stand up for the nature that protects us. Join this webinar to hear from experts about Ontario's policy that regulates (or doesn't) aggregate extraction and from communities that are fighting back to protect the land they love. We will also give you ways to take action to prevent deregulation of the aggregate industry.
