☢ Nuclear Industry Effort to Exploit Coronavirus Crisis for Backdoor Bailout Decried as 'Disaster Capitalism at its Worst' "The nuclear industry begged for a bailout last fall and is now using coronavirus to try and brazenly grab more cash," warned Friends of the Earth. More here. It’s time for the nuclear industry bail outs to end. Renewables and conservation are substantially lower cost, safer, and more benign.
☢ Small Modular Nuclear Reactors - Not Clean, Not Small, Not Green, Not Affordable Recording of Dr. Gordon Edwards of CCNR (Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility) March 13, 2020. Must watch!
☢ Starting the Olympic torch relay in Fukushima should remind us of the dangers of nuclear power The persistence of this contamination, and the economic fallout of the reactor accidents, should remind us of the hazardous nature of nuclear power.
☢ Uranium mining -- an in-depth look The Uranium Network has produced a film -- Uranium Mining, what are we talking about? -- along with a companion booklet, to shed light on uranium's origin and uses, while exploring the health, environmental and societal impacts of uranium mining along with its financial and social costs.
☢ Nuclear espionage Cyber security should be a concern at nuclear plants worldwide because of its capacity for severe accidents that can spread hazardous radioactive contamination across tens of thousands of sq kms requiring evacuations for decades or centuries.
☢ The Hazards of Tritium Dr. Ian Fairlie writes about the biological and health effects of exposures to tritium and the risks faced by people living near nuclear facilities. Tritium is a carcinogen, mutagen and teratogen. CANDUs (Canada's nuclear reactors) are tritium factories.
☢ Health and environmental groups appeal to International Atomic Energy Agency to nix Canadian appointment as chair of the IAEA The CNSC is widely perceived to be a "captured regulator" that prioritizes needs of the nuclear industry over protection of the public from radioactive pollutants released from nuclear facilities.
Ontario
☢ SMRs in the Ontario Leg Ontario Green Party Leader @MikeSchreiner speaks to this gov't’s insane electricity policy which is pouring billions into the nuclear industry to research “small modular nuclear reactors” while rejecting lower cost, lower risk and lower emission renewable sources including conservation, water power from Quebec and made-in-ON green energy.
☢ Hamilton fracked gas pipeline discussed in the ON leg GPO leader @MikeScheiner questions the wisdom of a new fracked gas pipeline through Hamilton which would cost tax payers $120M and contribute to a 400% increase in climate pollution, when lower cost renewable alternatives exist?
☢ Stop the fracked gas pipeline in Hamilton Enbridge wants to build a fracked gas pipeline across rural Hamilton and ramp up GHG pollution from our gas plants more than 400%. Check out this new 9-minute video from Hamilton350. Read our 2-page report. Sign the petition to stop Enbridge's Fracked Gas Pipeline.
Renewables and Conservation
☼ Nuclear lessons from the corona virus While wind turbines will keep spinning and solar arrays will continue to collect sunlight without any help from us, workers cannot leave a nuclear power plant untended.
☼ Solar power has been growing for decades. Then coronavirus rocked the market. Factory shutdowns in China have disrupted global supply chains for wind turbines and solar panels, with consequences for clean energy progress this year around the world. The International Energy Agency has encouraged governments that are planning stimulus packages in the wake of the pandemic to prioritize green investments and capitalize on the downturn in oil prices to phase out fossil fuels.
☼ Renewable energy should be the cornerstone of Canada’s net zero strategy The gov't of Canada has embraced a goal of achieving “net-zero” greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions economywide by 2050. Some 68% of our electricity already comes from renewable water, wind, solar and marine energy resources. That’s double the amount of electricity currently produced from nuclear and fossil fuels in Canada. We can go 100% renewable electricity! Phase out coal, gas and nuclear. Here's how: www.OntarioClimateAction.ca
Take Action
☢ Sign the petition to Phase-out Ontario’s gas plants The Ford Government wants to ramp up the greenhouse gas pollution from Ontario’s gas-fired power plants by more than 300% by 2025. Fortunately, there is no need for increased climate damaging pollution. Ontario can keep its lights on without increasing its greenhouse gas pollution by contracting for low-cost water power from Quebec and by investing in energy efficiency and cost-effective made-in-Ontario renewable energy.
☢ Order your FREE leaflets here calling on the Ford Government to Cut the Cuts and invest in water power from Quebec rather than rebuilding 10 nuclear reactor; immediately dismantle Pickering after shutdown in 2024, and phase out Ontario's gas plants and replace them with 100% renewable power.
