Disaster Capitalism, Alberta Style: How the Oil Industry and Politicians Exploited COVID-19
The pandemic was another chance to cut regulations and deliver public funds to oil, gas and pipeline companies. Using executive powers granted under a provincial state of public health emergency, Alberta is swiftly dismantling legislative, regulatory and financial barriers to oilsands development and pushing through the construction of controversial oil pipelines.

Ban on assault weapons welcome, but more needs to be done
The quick implementation of a ban on an assault rifles is welcome. The denunciation of weapons whose sole intention is to kill people is also welcome. But this rationale should also be extended to putting an end to Canada's growing arms export industry.

Ontario
Ontario's purchase of natural gas plants will cost ratepayers and the environment
Ramping up gas plants would make it nearly impossible for Ontario to achieve its climate goals. “This is a very bad investment, both from an economic perspective and climate perspective. It’s a waste of $2.8 billion.”

Should public consultation on the environment be an essential service?
The province's COVID-related suspension of environmental rules governing public input on major developments is undercutting protections against mining projects in "overwhelmed" First Nations communities. The temporary gutting of public consultation and engagement measures “undercuts the whole purpose of the EBR, which was to expand transparency and public participation in significant environmental decisions and make government accountable.”

Mayor Tory supports building the Bloor West bikeway extension
Mayor Tory spoke up this week about the launch of ActiveTO and the need for safe cycling infrastructure along our subway system to act as a “safety valve” for the TTC as part of the City’s pandemic response, including building the Bloor West bikeway extension all the way to Runnymede as soon as possible. The #ActiveTO plan will create more quiet streets – with traffic calming measures implemented very quickly as to enable local car traffic only and open up space for pedestrians and cyclists.

Health Impacts of Extreme Heat
Thursday, May 14, 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm EDT
Extreme heat is a hazard to human health and well-being. The health impacts of extreme heat are dependent on individual coping capacity, personal-to-city-level heat mitigation strategies, and access to cooling infrastructure, among other complex factors. Current and future conditions of extreme heat disproportionately impact communities that are already facing inequities. This webinar will address current research and applications on human health and extreme heat at the individual, community, and city levels and provide climate action guidance to city leaders, practitioners, and the public. Panelists will assess additional burdens and risks resulting from COVID -19.

Sat. May 16, 2 - 4 p.m. EST
On May 16, Palestinians and their allies around the world will mark the 72nd anniversary of the Nakba (The Catastrophe), the culmination of the mass expulsion of Palestinians from their homes by Zionist forces. We’re strongly urging the Canadian government to break the siege on Gaza as medical supplies are urgently needed, now more than ever, as the spread of COVID19 would result in a humanitarian disaster.
