Carbon emissions of richest 1% more than double the emissions of the poorest half of humanity

The richest one percent of the world’s population are responsible for more than twice as much carbon pollution as the 3.1 billion people who made up the poorest half of humanity during a critical 25-year period of unprecedented emissions growth, according to Oxfam’s new report, ‘Confronting Carbon Inequality.’

Stop investing the Canada Pension Plan in fossil fuels

The Canada Pension Plan (CPP) needs to stop investing public money in destructive fossil fuels. They are using billions of dollars of our hard-earned retirement savings to invest in risky oil, gas and coal companies that are fueling the climate crisis. Send a letter to the CPP today using this easy action tool.

Canadian Climate Accountability Act - we need one!

Canada has missed every single emissions reduction target it has ever set.  The adoption of a Climate Accountability Act could change that.  The CAA proposal developed by Ecojustice and other organizations would get us on a pathway to a low-carbon future by legislating targets, establishing an independent advisory body, and mandating five-year carbon budgets, impact reports, and climate plans. We need to advocate for a CAA and we need to advocate for increased climate ambition – a target of 60% below by 2030. Call on the federal government to table a climate accountability law in Parliament by the end of 2020.

Make the ultra-rich pay their share of the #JustRecovery

While poorer communities get hit the hardest by COVID-19 and climate change, the ultra-rich are getting richer. "a mere one percent tax on wealth over $20 million would net approximately $70 billion over 10 years, even with a realistic level of tax avoidance factored into the calculations."  It's time for a #WealthTax: Add your name here.

Axworthy: Trudeau’s rejection of UN Nuclear Ban must be corrected

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau opposes the treaty citing Canada’s NATO membership, which relies on nuclear weapons as part of its military strategy. But Former Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy says that position is inconsistent with Canada’s long history of opposing nuclear weapons, and “must be corrected.”

Some federal Greens and New Democrats are pushing for a temporary alliance

I support a Green-NDP alliance. The cons did it and that's how they won. Enough vote splitting. At least until we have PR.

ONTARIO

Ontario should phase out – not ramp up – its gas fired power plants

Doug Ford wants to ramp up Ontario's gas-fired power plants by more than 300% during the next 5 years blowing us past our climate targets. But there's a better way to keep our lights on – we can invest in conservation, water power from Quebec and made-in-Ontario wind and solar energy. More than 44 citizen groups including the Ontario Clean Air Alliance are calling for a phase out of Ontario's gas-fired power plants by 2030.

Add your name to the petition and send a letter to Doug Ford here: http://OntarioClimateAction.ca and here https://you.leadnow.ca/petitions/ontario-it-s-time-to-phase-out-gas

Common Ground: Shared goals for climate justice & poverty

Tuesday, October 13, noon EST

The demands of climate activists and anti-poverty activists are sometimes framed as having competing interests. In this webinar, however, our panelists will explore the common goals of climate justice and socio-economic justice, and how our demands complement, rather than contradict, one another. We will explore how the same groups of people are disproportionately affected by climate change and poverty, and how the way forward must be built on the principles of equity, anti-oppression, and sustainability. Citizens For Public Justice is hosting this webinar as part of their anti-poverty campaign.

Smog Town

Wed. Oct. 14, noon EST

Documentary film about the smog problem in Langfang, China. But Smog Town doubles as a shrewd metaphor for the wider folly of placing the burden of environmental protection on the micro-scale actions of private individuals; so long as large industrial emitters are given free reign, the battle to curb pollution is destined to be a losing one. Part of Planet in Focus International Environmental Film Festival.

Cut Your Carbon: Learn how you can become part of the solution

Sunday October 18, 2 pm EST

45% of Canada’s emissions come from household choices. If we’re going to meet our international reduction targets we all need to work together for change. We will take a look at the connections between systems change and individual choices and see that what we do as individuals really makes a difference. If you’ve wanted to take action but don’t know where to start this is the session for you!

At the end of this workshop participants will learn how to:

1) Know how to measure their carbon footprint and understand how our daily choices impact climate change

2) Start to think about their own personal process for making change in their lives

3) Make a Climate Pledge and have ideas for how to reduce their personal footprint

4) Understand the links between systems change and individual choices

5) Feel energized and inspired!
