Why Getting to Paris with Trudeau Doesn’t Cut it

Canada’s emissions were up 20.9% over 1990 levels while in the USA, they were up 3.7, in Germany and Britain they were down by 40%, and in the EU they were down by 24%. (all measured as against 1990)

‘Conventional Energy Bubble’ Could Cost Utilities $1 Trillion as Cheap Renewables Undercut Fossil and Nuclear Plants

Mainstream analysts have mispriced and overvalued not just coal, natural gas, nuclear, and hydropower plants themselves, but the mines, wells, pipelines, ports, and refineries that support them. Most of these assets will be stranded by solar, wind, and batteries over the next 10 to 15 years.

Who’s minding the nuclear file? Oversight needed for New Brunswick’s risky plutonium plan

Pierre Elliot Trudeau banned the extraction of plutonium from used nuclear fuel in Canada. Last week Justin Trudeau lifted the ban under a smokescreen of Orwellian doublespeak, handing over $50.5 million in taxpayer funds to a private company from the UK, Moltex Energy, to develop a technology that proposes to extract plutonium from used nuclear fuel from the Point Lepreau reactor on the Bay of Fundy.

Say no to new nuclear in the GTA

Ontario Power Generation wants to build a new nuclear reactor in the Greater Toronto Area (near Oshawa).  Estimates for the cost of power from small nuclear reactors are two to five times higher than the cost of solar and wind energy. There are no working commercial small nuclear reactors in Canada; it is a technology that is still on the drawing board with unproven performance and no track record of safety. Betting on this unproven technology makes little sense when solar and wind are less than half the cost, safer and will not create radioactive waste that has to be stored for hundreds of thousands of years. Send a message to ON leaders here.

Plummeting sperm counts, shrinking penises: toxic chemicals threaten humanity

A new book called Countdown, by Shanna Swan, an environmental and reproductive epidemiologist at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, finds that sperm counts have dropped almost 60% since 1973. Following the trajectory we are on, Swan’s research suggests sperm counts could reach zero by 2045. Zero.

Make the Rich Pay Their Fair Share

Wed. March 24, 1 p.m. EST

Tax policy can and must make society fairer! Canada is facing extreme inequality.  The richest 87 families have more wealth than the bottom 12 million citizens. Our tax system is highly flawed.  It has helped widen the divide between the very rich and the rest of us.  Tax loopholes allow the wealthiest to pay lower overall tax rates.  Corporate tax cuts have lined executives’ pockets.  No wealth or inheritance tax has allowed wealthy families to pass on extreme riches to the next generation. It’s time to expose our faulty tax system. And fix it!

How's the Air You're Breathing?

Thur. March 25, 6:30 p.m. EST

Depending on where you live, work and play, every day you may be breathing unhealthy air - air that is potentially dangerous to your health and those around you. Consider these facts:

1. In Canada, about 14,600 die from dirty air quality every year.

2. Worldwide, only about 5% of us are breathing truly healthy air.

3. Living near a busy intersection can increase the risk of contracting dementia later in life.

4. Air pollution can cause a measurable decrease in IQ for children and a measurable loss in lung function.

5. Across the world, dirty air causes some seven million early deaths annually

Climate Partners: The EU & Canada

Fri. March 26, 9:30 a.m. EST

Both Canada and the European Union have pledged to reach net-zero emissions, a transition to a low-carbon energy economy and an inclusive, green recovery. This shared goal produces the possibility of synergy on sustainability objectives, as well as twinned economic growth opportunities in the fields of clean energy development and energy security. There is rich potential for partnership for Canada with the European Union. How can Canada align itself with the EU’s work? Between the two, what has been achieved so far, and what’s on the horizon in the fight against climate?

After many years of work by Grassy Narrows and supporters like you, the federal government signed an agreement last Spring with Grassy Narrows and committed to build a Mercury Care Home using the community’s design! But Grassy Narrows still needs to gain just compensation for all of its people for the ongoing mercury crisis, to restore their health, way of life, and self-determination, and protect their land and water from industrial logging and mining. It’s time to launch a new phase of the campaign for mercury justice.
